RIP legendary film director Joel Schumacher. He directed the blockbusters “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “Batman Forever,” “Falling Down,” “The Client,” and “The Lost Boys,” and “A Time to Kill” among others. He studied interior design at Parsons and got his Hollywood debut as a costume designer for Woody Allen’s “Sleeper” I had the pleasure of photographing him and Nicolas Cage together at the Badlands Club for a feature on his crime drama thriller “8mm.” He was a kind man, with an intense interest and attention to detail on our production—lighting, technique, cameras, and film. I loved the texture and deep cut lines in Joel’s face—like a roadmap to his soul. . . . #joelschumacher #nicolascage photographed for Premiere Magazine, The Badlands, New York circa 1999. #holzhollywood30yearsofportraits
Photo of my father, Peter Phillip Holz taken at age 14 in 1935, before he fled Nazi Germany and immigrated to the United States. Against all odds, you were a dreamer and a survivor— a member of the “Greatest Generation” — a Commander in US Navy in WWll and Korea. Thanks for instilling in your family the virtues of hard work and perseverance. You left us way to young at the age of 64. You are forever in our hearts and memories. Happy Father’s Day Peter.

@billtjonesarniezaneco Today, June 10, 1pm: Bill T. Jones presents “Action/Phase 1: Reading”. Bill will be reading live from our lobby (at a distance ) excerpts from “Moby Dick”, “Invisible Man”, The Bible, and more! We will still participate in #OpenYourLobby , providing accessible bathrooms, water, hand sanitizer, charging stations, and snacks for the protesting activists in our community. Please join us outside of 219 West 19th Street while maintaining social distance and wear a mask. Bill will be amplified. ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿 Jones says “this action, for me, is an exploration and affirmation of the connection between the life of the mind, social evolution and the mysterious precincts of heart that inform creative people at all times, and particularly at a time with so much upheaval and uncertainty. In my isolation, I have gone through my library, which is in some way revisiting a pantheon of heroes, villains, the mausoleum of ideas, and the maternity ward of notions of what the future might be. I am reading as a way of thinking.” . . @bill_t .jones #billtjones Photographed for @vanityfair New York, 1992 #holzhollywood30yearsofportraits . . Censored to meet community guidelines
One year ago today, June 6, 2019, was the opening of our wonderful exhibition at the @helmutnewtonfoundation in Berlin. What a difference a year makes. I’ll never take for granted the ability to gather freely with a crowd, to travel freely, to exhibit freely, and to just hang out worry free with friends. It’s sure a different world right now. . . . #threeboysfrompasadena @markarbeitphotography @justloomis @taschen @benedikttaschen @harder_matthias @benediktpictures #helmutnewton #junenewton @nadine_dinter @parisbar .berlin @kimbraaudrey #berlin Installation 📸 @gerhardkassner
”Where are you? Our country is crippled and on its knees, begging to be heard and pleading for change. Where is our compassionate leader? The leader who unifies and inspires our country at our most painful time when we need it the most. The leader who steps up and takes full accountability for our country and embraces every color in it. The leader who picks our country up off its knees and says you have my word - we got this - and together, change will happen. Where are you? Because we’re all here. Maybe one day that galvanizing leader will emerge. Either way, the process to change has already begun. “ . . @therock #normalizeequality

“A lil’ late, a lil’ late, but to show my appreciation for #justiceforglitter , it’s now finally available everywhere! I thought we could all use some retro fun during this time!” @mariahcarey Check out this cool zine, posted this morning on Mariah’s Instagram, featuring a selection of never-before-seen outtakes from our 2001 iconic “Glitter" album and movie poster photo shoot. We photographed at Drive In Studios in New York, working late into the night with 10 different setups. Mariah loved the camera, and the camera loved her. I’ve had the great opportunity to photograph her many times over the years for editorial and album covers, and she’s always amazing. Photographically speaking, we finished each other’s sentences. “George is always focused on making me look the way he sees me when the camera isn’t rolling—capturing the essence of the real person, not just a persona.” Mariah Carey in #holzhollywood30yearsofportraits . . . #mariahcarey @rocnation Make up @kristoferbuckle Hair @roqchop
Many of you have been asking about the status of the Phoenicia Photographic Workshops. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our upcoming June workshop due to COVID-19. Luckily we have plenty of land and areas to stretch out and be creative in nature. People are yearning to create again. We’re still planning on the Aug 7-9 workshop, Portraits of Wilderness and The Human Form. We are also still offering one-on-one master classes. Things will be a bit different this year. Jen will be certified as a health and safety monitor for photoshoots, and we’ll implement lots of new safety protocols. The good news is, we have plenty of room to distance and plenty of fresh air. Shooting outdoors may be the healthiest thing we can do now. Be safe, stay creative, and shoot local: ) (link in bio for more info ) . . . . . @brittneypanda #theholzfarm #photographyworkshop #grummancanoe

La Dolce Vita— My heart goes out to beautiful Italy, a country so ravaged by the Covid-19. Italy meant so much to me as a fledgling photographer in the early 1980’s. I moved to Milan, upon the advice of Helmut Newton, and joined my Art Center classmate,Mark Arbeit, where we shared a small studio apartment that had that had no heat, but it did house a modeling agency on the top floor. I basically knocked on doors for the first six months with my very broken Italian, and eventually got a still life job from Donna magazine, which eventually led to beauty and fashion for other Lei, Linea Italiana, Vogue Italia and others. This photo was from my first location fashion shoot for a teen magazine called “100 Cose” that I shot on location in Portofino, a wonderful place where we would later often visit on weekends. I returned to Italy for work over the years—I even printed my first book there. There is something so special and welcoming about the warm people, the language, the food, and the whole way of life. I have the upmost appreciation and gratitude for the country, I miss it dearly. I came across this photo recently, and realized it really epitomized that era. I wonder about the bystanders in the photo, and pray their families survived and are all OK. . . #Italy #portofino @markarbeitphotography @artcenteredu @helmutnewtonfoundation
