We had to share this post by our friend Elvira at @euphoriacounselling - empathy is about putting yourself in another’s shoes, not trying to fix their problem or trying to take what they’re feeling away. ⁣ ⁣ It can be extremely vulnerable and painful to touch on these emotions, but the connection this creates is much more valuable than any other type of response. ⁣ ⁣ Brené Brown recognises 4 key steps for practicing empathy: ⁣ ⁣ 1. Putting yourself in their shoes.⁣ 2. Listening without judgement (easier said than done, admittedly ). ⁣ 3. Touching on another’s emotions that may feel familiar to you. What is this reminding you of? Have you felt this before? ⁣ 4. (DISCLAIMER : One of those cognizance kinda post ) penning it down straight away because I'm afraid I'll loose this feeling. Right now I feel that my username is, Blissful. I'm not clear headed but I'm ok with that because I've accepted you can't always be ok and that literally is ok in itself I'm relaxed. My body is mitigated and my jaw unclenched. My bangs are open and not bothering. My body feels light and free. I still remember my wounds, but at this moment, none of those matter. None of the deceptions, none of the infidelity is bothering me. I'm in a state I always want to be in. I've forgiven the one's who did me wrong and I apologise to those whom I might have hurt. My thoughts feel as pure as the driven snow. Things have hurt, things will hurt. People have left, people will leave. We have difficulty with loving ourselves when our parents are either detached or excessively controlling. In both cases, we end up lacking confidence and self-worth. We may even start to believe we are unloveable. This is when we tend to seek external validation because we are unable to internally validate ourselves. These behaviours can be as destructive, even more at times than “words”. • 🌪A bit like a tornado, these unhealthy communication-behaviours accomplishes nothing, but destruction on their passage and the aftermath can be a real disaster. Returning to a sense of normality can be anxiety-provoking for many of us. This weekend I experienced my first night out "out" in a very long time. To say I was apprehensive would be an understatement, however being with friends that I feel comfortable with and using the evening to appreciate spending quality time with them doing something which was a taste of "normality" was so fulfilling that my worries were no longer at the forefront of my mind.  - This is not to stay that everyone should go out regardless of their concerns, but a reminder to take it one step at a time. I'm actually weirdly grateful that by having to got to work throughout the UK lockdown, I've had to adapt to the new way of life very quickly (and without choice ). So in some respect, I've become used to wearing masks, social distancing and being cautious around large groups. However, there are still moments throughout my week where a sudden wave of anxiety will halt me and try to throw me off balance. At times I have to remind myself that many of us will still be feeling quite anxious, and that's okay.  -  It took everyone a while to adjust to coping during lockdown, and I expect the same will happen as the lockdown restrictions begin to ease. Whether you're anxious, fearful or stressed about the lockdown restrictions easing, your feelings are valid. Take the small steps you need to. This is not a race to see who can return to normality first. Don't compare yourself to what everyone else is doing on social media. The Mental Health Foundation advise that we should attempt to build our tolerance by setting small, frequent goals every few days to ease ourselves into the "new normal". They also have some brilliant resources for anyone who is struggling throughout this time.  - Remember, you are not alone - you've survived 100% of your bad days, you've got this. #mentalhealthawareness #coping #anxiety #healthanxiety #itsokaynottobeokay
