I was surprised to discover this film. Not only is it depressingly relevant today, it also a fairly down the middle cop thriller from one of American cinema’s quieter auteurs, Charles Burnett. With films like Killer of Sheep and To Sleep with Anger under his belt, this feels not only like a departure in content but also in form. Gone is the expressionism and poetic language, instead Burnett takes a no frills approach in order, one assumes, to reach the widest audience possible. This leads to an uncharacteristic lack of depth in character and narrative, which is by no means anomalous when such independent filmmakers enter the multiplex world. However, Burnett’s observant and empathetic eye is still present. In Michael Boatman’s often limp and frustrating protagonist, Burnett manages to pull out the humanity by simply lingering on his face just a moment longer than most other filmmakers would. Same for performances from Ice Cube, Bernie Casey, Lori Petty and even the cavalcade of dirty white cops that surround our heroes. The film’s greatest strength is its unnerving longevity. Made in the time between Rodney King and OJ Simpson, the depiction of the LAPD and any other major police department feels bracingly accurate and not all that different from how cops operate today, 26 years after this film entered and left theaters to little fanfare. Thankfully, films like this get more recognition now, but the problems at its heart are by no means solved. . . #blackvoices #blackfilm #blackfilmmaker #blackfilmmaking #charlesburnett #killerofsheep #tosleepwithanger #theglassshield #loripetty #icecube #berniecasey #90smovies #policebrutality #lapd #1994 #blackpoliceofficers #endpolicebrutality #blackartmatters #movies #cinema #filmmaker #drama #thriller #corruption #blacklivesmatter #blackmovies #moviereview #movierecommendation #instamovies

The novels of Terry McMillan had a strong 5 year run in Hollywood in the late-90s. The three movie run was largely precipitated by the success of 1995’s WAITING TO EXHALE, buoyed by the star power of pop star Whitney Houston and recent Oscar nominee Angela Bassett. The film itself, directed by Forest Whitaker, is very much a product of its time stylistically, often to its detriment. The four leads all perform admirably, but the film around them is bland, uneven and often reductive. The state’s messages of this film, female empowerment and escaping the shackles of a man’s approval, is well-worth enforcing and remains a depressingly rare thing. Yet very little of the film’s running time is to devoted to exploits beyond romantic endeavors. The next film, three years later, was the Angela Bassett vehicle HOW STELLA GOT HER GROOVE BACK, which is even more frustrating. The character of Stella is fascinating, played wonderfully by Bassett, yet the film around her doesn’t seem to notice how complex she is. There is a deep and compelling story of a woman going through crisis along the lines of Alex Ross Perry’s work, yet the film seems content skating along the surface, prioritizing the aesthetics of Stella’s romance without digging any deeper (aside: I will forever think it a tragedy that Bassett and Whoopi Goldberg didn’t get a string of Crosby/Hope style comedies. Their chemistry is perfect ). The best of the bunch is Gina Prince-Blythewood’s HBO drama DISAPPEARING ACTS, unsurprisingly given that Prince-Blythewood is the best filmmaker of the bunch. Sanaa Lathan and Wesley Snipes are gripping as two everyday New Yorkers struggling to stay together, despite their own ambitions and their own histories. But the real star here is Prince-Blythewood, whose direction of the first and only film she didn’t write, keeps both characters from slipping into outright villainy even as they both hurt each other. Is it as strong as LOVE JONES, a similar film from the same era? Not quite. Is it the best movie to come from a Terry McMillan novel? No question. . . #blackvoices #blackfilmmaking #blackfilmmakers #terrymcmillan #waitingtoexhale #howstellagothergrooveback #disappearingacts

#ThrowbackThursday Me and #SAFETheSeries co-creator @Aron_ny . We are Black excellence making films for our people, by our people.⠀ ⠀ We grew up in Harlem and have lived every aspect of the story we share in the series--the good, the bad, and the ugly. These personal scars now serve as battle wounds for the storytelling of S.A.F.E.⠀ ⠀ To look at us now you'd never know the struggles we've gone through. We are kings and thriving is our greatest form of protest.⠀ ⠀ Shot on location in NY's gritty streets, S.A.F.E gives a raw account of life for today's teenager from five distinct perspectives. Each teen has different family dynamics that often influence their paths for better or worse.⠀ ⠀ Check out the first episode on the website and tell some friends. Link in bio. ⠀ ⠀ And because filmmaking is our tool of protest we're observing #BlackAugust this month in celebrating those Black #FreedomFighters that paved the way for us to do what we do.⠀ ⠀ #Blackfilmmaking is revolutionary!⠀ ⠀ S/O 2 cast & crew:⠀ ⠀ @noel .calloway.films and @aron_ny ⠀ ⠀ @tashianawashington ⠀ ⠀ @ambre .anderson⠀ ⠀ @the_jas_anderson ⠀ ⠀ @akbluez ⠀ ⠀ @muraadhaadee ⠀ ⠀ @Nakia_StylePhyle ⠀ ⠀ @tellmeastory11 ⠀ ⠀ @Itstamarafay ⠀ ⠀ @dedratate ⠀ ⠀ @sallyactor ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #blackfilms #HarlemNY #WhereAreWeSafe #blackyouthmatter #blackyouth ⠀ #TellBlackStories #DirectedByNoelCalloway #DefundThePolice #ForTheCulture ⠀ #MakeDopeShit #WeThePeople #blackspaces #blackfilmmaker #blackfilmsmatter ⠀ #blackfilmmakers #blackfilmdirector #supportblackcreatieves ⠀ ⠀

Long post 🚨:So from the conception of the idea for the story about teachers in the steam room with @fabulouslyfit29 in 2016 to the daily conversations about education with @the_real_ifeoma and @erinpride and @tracemysteps_ and all the other wonderful educators I know I decided to write a story. This story started with my mother who was a teacher to me because I sincerely believe some people were born to educate with that gift of the spirit which makes teaching just like breathing. No teaching isn’t always as effortless as breathing, but the care and love I have for this gift and profession helps me to look beyond the student and the inconveniences of politics. I’m saying all this to say I’m overwhelmed to be nearly sold out for my first showing of my film. I appreciate the support and am overwhelmed with joy and grateful ness to everyone! #thosewhocan #thosewhocant #educators #blackeducators #njindependentfilm #blackdirector #blackdirectors #blackfilmmakers #blackfilmmaking #blackactorsmatter
