Perfect morning reading spot while i am up in the mountains. “Caste” so far is a really insightful read; the connections built between pre-Nazi take over in Germany and American society at that time were startling (yet somehow not surprising. ) Anyone eyeing our political climate right now and wary about Trump’s dictator-esqe style of leadership should read this. This book. 🖤 I have binged through the audio version in days, captivated and horrified. I’m unmoored. Is it possible that the US doesn’t have simply a problem of race- or poverty, or class- but of caste? Author #isabelwilkerson makes a damning case in the affirmative, deftly tying together the history of casteism in #India , the Nazi regime in #1930s #Germany , with Ty he #antebellum and #jimcrow past of the #unitedstates - and how Americans of all races suffer because of it today, psychologically, emotionally, physically and financially. 📖🖤📚 #readingisfundamental #books #2020 #authors #ushistory #hinduism #mlk #blackhistory #christianity #castetheoriginsofourdiscontents #eastofedenblog #caste #worldhistory #onedroprule #nazism #segregation

Caste and subjugation have been married to each other ever since the practice existed in major parts of India. Literature as we know ,is usually associated with being sacred. This upheld a hierarchical structure of some people primarily on the basis of their occupation. This idea is propagated and reiterated in 'pious texts and verses'. They have excluded on the basis of gender and have marginalized communities. What rises in an effort to include more communities and passing the mic to the communities to write their own histories and atrocities. The article "The Portrayal of Caste in Literature through a Gendered Perspective" takes you through these instances and more. Head over to our website to read the full article. Link in bio. A recent report by journalist and anti-caste activist Tejas Harad ( @h_tejas ) reveals how Bahujan journalists are isolated and discriminated against in Indian media's overwhelmingly upper-caste newsrooms. In January 2020, Harad conducted a survey with 16 journalists from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes. The survey revealed that Bahujan journalists face challenges such as difficulty in integrating in an overwhelmingly upper-caste and upper class newsroom, facing rejection for their stories and being asked to cover caste issues exclusively, experiencing covert caste-based discrimination, and being confronted for eating meat or beef at the workplace. A 2019 Oxfam India and Newslaundry study had revealed that the number of upper-caste journalists and editors in English and Indian language media is extremely high at almost 88%, while the number of DBA journalists is overwhelmingly low. Harad, who is also a fellow of the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, gives the following recommendations for increasing the representation of DBA journalists in Indian media: 1. Affirmative action policies for hiring journalists from marginalised castes should be implemented by news organisations. 2. Newsrooms should educate themselves around the issue and conduct regular workshops on conscious and unconscious caste bias. 3. News organisations should have policies that forbid caste-based discrimination and harassment at the workplace, which must include a system for complaint, appeal and consequences. 4. Journalists and editors should be aware of and demonstrate their knowledge of existing laws concerning caste-based discrimination such as the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities ) Act, 1989. Dr. Harold Franklin, 86, has finally received his master’s degree from Auburn University! In 1964, Franklin, a Talladega native, was the first African-American student to integrate Auburn University. Initially, Franklin said Auburn denied him admission to the university and a dorm room on campus. Franklin added he and long-time civil rights attorney Fred Gray defeated Auburn twice in federal court. In 1969, the young Alabama State University graduate ran into barriers at Auburn when he submitted his thesis to get his master's degree. The roadblocks ultimately kept Franklin from graduating from Auburn. He left and got his master's degree from the University of Denver. Auburn University invited Franklin to come back to university in February to finally defend his thesis. He was set to walk across the stage in May but that didn’t happen due to COVID-19. His degree came in the mail last week. #Auburn #discrimination #UniversityofDenver #mastersdegree #Talladega #AuburnUniversity #disinfranchisement #Alabama #civilrights #rightingawrong #blacklivesmatter #blackmen #JimCrowe #thesis #covid19 #education #blackmenmatter #degree #AlabamaStateUniversity #BLM #denied #castesystem #caste #FredGray #federalcourts #roadblocks

Happy release day to Caste by Isabel Wilkerson! An unreserved 5/5 stars, as I knew it would be from page 1 ✨ . The word Caste, for me and I'm sure for almost everyone, immediately brings India to mind. I have never considered that American racism is also a caste system, or that Nazi Germany was as well. . In this book the Pulitzer prize winning Wilkerson compares the three in astonishing ways: the Untouchables in India, Black people in America and Jews in the Nazi Third Reich, to paint a picture of how caste systems develop and how they are used to keep people down. This book absolutely blew my mind. In all my anti-racist reading and self education it had never even occurred to me to think of America with a caste hierarchy, even though it seems so obvious after reading this masterpiece. . An interesting comparison between the three systems she explored is their timescales: millennia for India, centuries for America, and mere years for Nazi Germany, to identify the most "other" among them (based on ridiculous criteria that don't hold up to any scrutiny ) and persecute them. . She deconstructed caste into eight pillars, all of which America displays, as well as how race (and therefore caste ) played into both Obama and Trump's elections, how Confederate ideas still dominate the South and so many more brilliant observations I can't even begin to list them. . I could not recommend a book more highly, this has become not only one of my favourite non-fiction books, but one of my absolute favourite books from any genre this year. . So grateful to @penguinrandomhouse via @aniagordon for sending me this copy!

An important part of the unlearning process is looking past our own privilege and acknowledging issues that may not directly affect us. For some of us, the caste system might just be a lesson we learnt in school a long time ago, or something we’ve discussed in debates, or even something we vaguely remember from the news, but it is very much a real issue for those who lack that privilege. Caste||Isabel Wilkerson • • #thestacksreview Thank you @randomhouse for this ARC. • • CASTE was easily one of my most anticipated reads of 2020. I am known to have prosthelytized for THE WARMTH OF OTHER SONS, a book that I often say changed my life and the way I see myself in this world. Needless to say CASTE had some pretty big shoes to fill. Overall I enjoyed reading the book, but it didn’t live up to my astronomical expectations. I still think you should read CASTE. I still think it is a very good book. • • What I loved was Wilkerson’s restructuring of racism into the framework of a caste system. I didn’t know much about castes at all, so learning about the system of oppression in India provoked a desire to learn more. I appreciated seeing common cause with the Dalit people. I am also constantly impressed by Wilkerson’s sheer depth of research, I do wish she would’ve trusted her readers with more of that information. Let me just say this again, this book is very good. • • Where the book missed for me was structure and depth. I felt it was very slow to start, and maybe even had a few stops and starts. It wasn’t until the third section that I even really understood the way the book would proceed. The examples in the book are very surface, mostly antidotal. If you’ve got a cursory understanding of race in America there really isn’t much new information in the book. If you’re new to how Black folks have been oppressed in America you’ll find this book revelatory. I kept asking myself who is the intended audience? • • The writing is extraordinary. Wilkerson makes sense of so much history and psychology and sociology without forcing her reader to labor at all. Her use of language as a tool to completely reimagine what we know in America as racism is stunning. Even if the ideas were not new. • • Overall this book is exceptional, despite my criticisms. I learned things here and there. It did not however change or challenge me in any way. I might have been asking too much, like literary lightening to strike twice. • • If you’ve read this book I’d love to hear your thoughts. #thestacks

“We became best friends at work when we met 6 years ago. At the time I was studying for my CS exam, so he was my biggest stress buster. I’d go to the library to study & he'd sometimes surprise me with my favourite chocolates! We spoke everyday...I’d wait eagerly for his calls. We always knew there was a spark but neither of us confessed. We got closer over the next 1.5 years–we’d tell each other everything. He’d even tell me about rishtas he was getting! I never took it seriously until he actually met a girl. We met after & I asked him, ‘Are we sure we want to marry other people?’ He said no & kissed me. I remember thinking...finally! The next day he asked if I was ready for a relationship–I said yes! The day after that, he took me to my favourite restaurant for dinner. He ordered a pastry with ‘Will you marry me?’ on it. That was it–it was the easiest decision of my life. We were both so sure, but we were from different castes so we knew our parents would take some convincing. His parents wished he’d told them sooner, but after they met me, they were on board. But my dad was horrified that I could even think of marrying a ‘non-vegetarian’ from another caste. He’d say, ‘It’s just a phase’. But I was adamant–I told him that it was him or no one. So, when he saw no way out, he decided to check our kundlis; they didn’t match. So he tried using that to break us up. But I stood my ground. This went on for 2 years. When my parents realised we weren’t going to budge, they met his parents. His parents told mine, ‘They’re mature enough to make their own decision, let’s get them married.’ My dad finally said ‘Ye pagal toh maanegi hi nahi’, & agreed! 3 months later, we were married. You won’t believe it–my dad danced the most at my wedding! We’ve been married for 7 months now. From not even looking at him in the eye, my dad now says, ‘Beta, itne din se phone nahi kiya!’ It’s a whole different feeling to be together after fighting for each other–I can’t imagine my life with anyone else. Still, we’re not perfect–we do fight, but it usually ends with him imitating me shouting & us bursting out laughing. That’s the thing about us, there are no deal breakers...ever.”

My uncle, whom I affectionately call dad, was an outsider who made it big in the film industry. I’m glad there is an active debate on the practices behind the scenes. Nepotism is just the tip of the iceberg. I’ve only ever made one film with my family, my 1st, and I’m grateful to be blessed and have that privilege. I’ve gone that extra mile in my career to make my own path, something that dad always encouraged. For me he was the inspiration. Nepotism is prevalent everywhere in our culture, be it in politics, business, or film. I was well aware of it and it pushed me to take chances with new directors and producers throughout my career. That is how I was able to make movies that were considered “out of the box.” I’m glad some of those artists and films went on to have tremendous success. While it plays a part in every country, nepotism has taken on another dimension here in India. I suspect caste plays a major role in it being more pronounced here than in other parts of the world. After all, it is “jati” that dictates that a son carry on the work of his father, while the daughter is expected to marry and be a housewife. If we are serious about making changes for the better, then focusing on only one aspect, one industry, while ignoring the many others, will be incomplete and possibly counter productive. We need a cultural evolution. After all, where do our filmmakers, politicians and businessmen come from? They are people just like everyone. They grow up within the same system as everybody else. They are a reflection of their culture. Talent everywhere deserves a chance to shine in his or her medium. As we have learnt over the past few weeks, there are several ways in which an artist is either uplifted to success, or beaten down to failure. I’m glad more actors are coming out today and speaking of their experiences. I’ve been vocal about mine for years now, but as a lone voice I could only do so much. It’s easy to smear one artist for speaking out, and I have been at the receiving end from time to time. But as a group, a collective, that becomes difficult. Maybe now is our watershed moment. #change #equalopportunity #nepotism #caste #jati #nuance #dialogue

A caste system is an inherited social stratification; an unchangeable, hierarchical classification of people within society. It’s internalized and inescapable, socialized as “natural”, and doesn’t inform individual economy so much as structure how broader society will respond to it. Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents draws comparisons between racist history in the US and other caste systems—most emphatically, actually, that of Nazism. This painstaking connection of social and structural racism is brilliantly written and well argued; this book is an excellent answer to questions about the interplay of individual and systemic racism, tokenism, expectations, freedom and pain. It’s a difficult and incredible read, with both violent detail and engaging storytelling, and I had a difficult time putting it down even at its most heartbreaking. While I do wish the citations were a bit more clear (there aren’t any, outside of direct quotes ), and worry that those most in need of this message are the most likely to resist picking it up, this is an essential addition to the conversation about the ways we internalize social structure and excuse ourselves from dismantling it, and how complicit we are when we choose silence. I hope you’ll read it. What did you read this weekend?
