@the_real_eyeeeeee #memoriesyear2018 Part of Photo Story - Former wage labour, Ramlal Bhil, 50, was a patient of Tuberculosis for three years. He passed away two months after I met him. He didn’t have any close one from his family. For whole day he used to rests in weakness under a neem tree on his cot while his relatives used to offer leftover food and fill a pot of water for him. Every morning he used to crawl to bushes for defecation. “With lack of proper diet but overworked, there are many people in these villages who are affected or died from Tuberculosis” said 68 year old Khemraj Choudhary. Full story link in bio. You can watch video story on IGTV highlighted in bio. I visited seven villages in Chittorgarh district in Rajasthan in India. Rajasthan state where the Bhil tribe make up 39% of the tribal population. Tribal villagers in the district had no economic stability, healthcare or even education, with some often being forced to take up bonded wage labor, with monthly incomes as low as US$7, and sometimes even nothing. #Dalitdesk #tuberculosis #dalitlivesmatter #discrimination #ActNow #disease #natgeo #china #modi #indiaphotoproject #reuters #gardien #charitymiles #charity #unicef #vision #fashion #crueltyfree #portrait_vision #streetlook #equalityforall #gatesfoundation #poverty #nutrition #ecosystem #lifestory #healthcare #nelsonmandela #foundation

When I was in India, one afternoon I went down to speak in the southern part of India in a school that was attended by large by young boys and girls who were children of former untouchables. And I remember that afternoon that the principal got up to introduce me. As he came to the end of his introduction he said I would like to present to you a fellow untouchable from the United States of America. For the moment I was peeved, I was shocked that I would be introduced as an untouchable. But pretty soon my mind ran back across to America and I started thinking about the fact that there were so many places that I could not go because of the colour of my skin. I started thinking about the fact that my 20 million brothers and sisters in the Negro community of America, still at the bottom of the economic ladder, deprived of adequate housing conditions, unable to live in numerous neighbourhoods because of the colour of their skin. I started thinking about the fact that my little children were still judged on the basis of the colour of their skin rather than the content of their character and I had to say to myself that I am an untouchable and every negro in the United States is untouchable. #blacklivesmatter #dalitlivesmatter #equity #equality #justice #freedom #fraternity #liberty #martinlutherking #drambedkar #dalitsblacks #caste #paranjith #icantbreathe #loveislove #dalitsforblacklives

Made some corrections my sanatani brothers and sisters. These people do not represent “South Asians” when most of their posts are all anti Indian and hinduphobic. They’re run by islamists, Khalistanis and the radical far left from India. •Retweet’s Pakistani’s take on India’s secularism and Ram mandir. Yes, you heard that right. The Islamic non secularistic republic of Pakistan has the nerve to talk about India’s internal matters. •Doesn’t have issues with Pakistan and Bangladesh minorities oppressive treatment but “inDia is fAsciST”. I request all to not follow these fake south Asian representatives. They only represent Muslims and Islam in a good way when that’s the most oppressive religion for women, nonbelievers and lgbt community. Once again I am repeating “THEY ARE A BUNCH OF TERRORISTS IN THE GUISE OF SOUTH ASIAN REPRESENTATIVE” they hate us cos we are paganic devil worshipers for them. They support the bringing down of Winston Churchill’s statue but doesn’t want us Hindus to bring down the same mxslim invader’s symbol which was constructed on a destroyed Ram temple. We have been under the colonial rule by mxslim rulers since 800 years way before the British. They stole our lands, destroyed our temples, imposed harsh tax and massacred non believers. And these so called South Asian Representatives are supporting this oppressor and made hinduphobic slurs like “fuckRammandir”. I request you people once again not to fall for their fake narratives.

Rajyashree Goody @rajgoody Titled : Laddoos @sarvesh and I didn’t have a second thought about collecting this one. Shown @indiaartfair by the ingenious @galleryske ( who have an artist collective like none other ). • We aren’t privy to discrimination and class & caste based biases. When I decided to take a photo of this piece, I had to leave one laddoo out of this set. This is what I think best describes the society, culture and law that you & I subscribe to by choice or by compulsion. The laddoos were formed by pulping the Manusmriti, a Hindu rule book that didn’t allow inter caste dinning among others. • @galleryske has an eye for their artists. @rajgoody has captured the culinary zeitgeist of what constitutes 25% of our country’s population through her art. In an interview with @studiointernational1893 in 2018 she says, “One’s caste-occupation can sometimes directly correspond to one’s eating habits. Dalit people have a very, very complex relationship with food, which people of an upper class or caste don’t experience. This could manifest as enjoying your food, but also knowing that access to it might be difficult on a daily basis, or enjoying your food, but that enjoyment also being layered with shame, because the food you are eating, such as beef or pork, is not seen as pure. Or it could be not enjoying your food and just eating what you have to eat to survive.” Read more here- https://www.studiointernational.com/index.php/rajyashri-goody-interview-eat-with-great-delight-dalit-caste-system #indiaartfair #art #ambedkar #buddha #food #laddoos #dalitlivesmatter

As we celebrate Women In Translation month we highlight the different lived experiences of women, the variety of voices among women writers and the importance of translation in bringing representations of these to readers. Mother Wit is a collection of short stories by Urmila Pawar that is informed by her intersecting identities as a Dalit, a feminist and a Buddhist. Her sharp, powerful language asserts and reveals the lived realities of women that are shaped by centuries of oppression. The collection has been translated to English by Veena Deo . . . #Motherwit #urmilapawar #translationtuesdays #WITMonth #witmonth2020 #translatedfiction #dalitliterature #dalitlivesmatter #womenwriters #readwomen #womenintranslation #indianliterature #womenwhowrite #tuesdaymotivation #readingisfundamental #indianreaders #TheCuriousReader

In India, Aravanis is a term used for male to female transgender who undergo genital modification through SRS or perform nirwaan which is a traditional mode of castration. The lack of education, absence of proper educational certificates, discrepancies between various sets of documents such as birth certificates and their status post the SRS reduce aravanis's chances of gaining formal employment. Those who get hired, face discrimination at the workplace. They also face discrimination of being disowned from ancestral wealth. #transgender #transgenderrights #transrights #transgenderrightsarehumanrights #transgenderindia #dalitlivesmatter #dalit #intersectionality #intersectionalfeminism #ambedkarites #ambedkarism #manualscavenging #banmanualscavenging #stopdiscrimination

Casteism has defeated the best among us - from Gandhi to Ambedkar, Phule and Shahu. Each day brings news of a new caste-related atrocity and humiliation. We’ve responded with silence, not because we are embarrassed by caste but because we believe in it. From Tushar Gandhi’s pen flows another superb piece for @allindiansmatter that argues that Dalit lives have never mattered and they never will. #newsworthy Three incidents of caste-based atrocities against Dalits that have been reported in the last week you should know about: 📌 Two Dalit youths were allegedly tied to a tree, assaulted and made to lick spit by a mob of Yadav community members from their village for allegedly killing their goat at Ghaghardiha village in Giridih, Jharkhand. . Later, in a Panchayat, the two were also made to pay a fine of Rs 60,000. . But the victims allege the goats entered their fields and they were chasing them away with sticks when the owners saw them. They killed the goats and threw them in the Dalits' premises alleging they had killed them. Later, they assaulted and humiliated them in public. . 18 people, including village Mukhiya, have been named in the FIR lodged by the two Dalit youths. . 📌 Last Wednesday, G Narasimha, 35, a Dalit farmer, was mowed down by a lorry and killed after he stopped a few persons from lifting sand from his agricultural land in Thirmalapur, Telangana. . Three persons were arrested on Saturday, and then immediately released, as a few personnel at the police station are Covid-positive. They were arrested once again on Monday. . 📌 Last week, the body of a Dalit woman was taken off a funeral pyre by about 200 upper-caste men who said she could not be cremated on communal land in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. . An video showing men removing firewood from the pyre as a body lay on the ground had been viewed nearly 200,000 times. . What you need to know: Caste-based atrocities take place every hour across India. At least two Dalits are assaulted every hour, and every day, three Dalit women are raped, two Dalits are murdered and two Dalit homes are torched on average. An important part of the unlearning process is looking past our own privilege and acknowledging issues that may not directly affect us. For some of us, the caste system might just be a lesson we learnt in school a long time ago, or something we’ve discussed in debates, or even something we vaguely remember from the news, but it is very much a real issue for those who lack that privilege. SWIPE SWIPE! On 28 July 2020, The National Investigation Agency (NIA ) arrested Dr. Hany Babu, Associate Professor at the Department of English in the University of Delhi, in connection with the Elgaar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon Case.   Prof. Babu was forced to provide false testimony against other activists and to accept allegations of being a functionary of the Maoists. Even under immense pressure, Prof. Babu, a conscientious teacher and activist, refused to concur with these lies. Because he stood for truth, Prof. Babu was arrested after five days of harassment in the name of interrogation. The arrest of Prof. Babu is the continuation of an almost year-long harassment which began with a raid of his house on 10 September 2019. Prof. Babu is the twelfth person to be arrested in relation to the case. As anti-caste scholars and activists, we understand that the framing of Prof. Hany Babu, a tireless anti-caste intellectual and activist, is an attempt to penalise Dalit bahujans for raising their voice against casteist practices. It is a tragic irony that the Indian Government is using a celebratory event of Dalits to frame anti-caste scholars and activists.   Please Sign the 'STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY' *LINK IN BIO* "A huge thanks to the following people who helped me compile the information of this comic and to understand the gravity of the situation.. How dare you love, 2020 On 14 March 2016, Tamil Nadu woke up to CCTV footage of the gruesome hacking of a young couple in Udumalaipettai. Kausalya (19 ), a native of Dindigul belonging to a dominant caste, had married Shankar (22 ), a Dalit youth of Udumalpet in Tirupur district. Their marriage was strongly opposed by Kaushalya’s parents, who hired killers to eliminate the young couple. When the couple was walking near Udumalpet Town bus stand, they were brutally attacked by a three-member gang. Shankar died on the spot, while Kausalya survived with minor injuries. The Tirupur district session court sentenced six people including Chinnasamy, the father of Kausalya, to death for murdering Shankar on December 12, 2017. Of the 11 accused, three others, including her mother Annalakshmi, maternal uncle Pandithurai and a minor relative, were acquitted of all charges. Later, all the accused filed an appeal against the sentence. After reviewing the appeals, a division bench of the Madras High Court on 22nd June 2020 set aside the death sentence awarded to five convicts including the father of Kausalya, Chinnasamy, by dropping all the charges against him. Besides, it set aside a death sentence awarded to five convicts by modifying it to a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years. As per Kausalya, “Chinnasamy is the prime accused in the murder case. Acquitting him in the case is gross injustice to Shankar. I revealed all the facts and statements to the Session Court judge about the involvement of Chinnasamy, Annalakshmi and others in the case. Since the death sentence must be confirmed by the higher court, the case was taken in the Madras High Court. But shockingly the court has acquitted Chinnasamy and Annalakshmi. Besides, reduction of the death sentence to life sentence for others is also unbearable as I pointed these killers in the court and the entire incident happened in broad daylight.” #dalitlivesmatter #justiceforshankar #udumalpetkilling #castekilling #honourkilling #justice #equality #fraternity #casteism #dalitvoices #bahujanvoices #biasedjustice #incredibleindia #delhi #2020 #bakeryprasad

PLEASE READ - Message from @nrithyapillai who is from the Isai Vellalar community and a Bharathanatyam dancer herself: I find the narrative of this video problematic due to its misrepresentations, lack of nuance, and the most important of all - the appropriation of the marginalisation and lived reality of my BAHUJAN community/caste - Isai Vellalar. Please refer to my social media for further clarity on this subject. ORIGINAL POST: Celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer, @_aranyani_ of @vyutidancecompany , breaks down how Bharatanatyam’s roots lie with the Isai Vellalar community. From her Ted Talk at @tedxdtu . EDIT #2 : It’s important to recognize that Ms. Bhargav here is using the term Devadasi, when in fact she should be using Hereditary Courtesan Dancer Community (of Isai Vellalar, like she rightfully mentioned ). In the spirit of being fair, we are all learning here at every level and I encourage anyone who engages with this post to approach it with that mindset. I have posted some extra resources to highlight the Devadasi issue (via a policy report from the Centre for Law and Policy Research ) and I’ve also posted the words of an Isai Vellalar dancer who is deeply educated on her ancestral history. I encourage you to not stop at this video and to continue your research and understanding of the topic. Davesh Soneji’s book, “Unfinished Gestures” has also been cited as a great resource for building a deeper understanding of the issue at hand. Please also refer to Dr. Saskia Kersenboom’s book Nityasumangali: Devadasi Tradition in South India. #bharatanatyam #carnaticmusic #brahmins #caste #thecastesystem #tamil #tamizh #tamilnadu #andhrapradesh #telugu #karnataka #kannada #kerala #malayalam #indianart #southasia #india #bangladesh #pakistan #srilanka #southindian #southindia #dalitlivesmatter

What Does a Dalit Look Like? #3 . On this day, close to half a century ago, the Dalit Panthers were formalized. In another world, another place, their demands for truth and justice would have been met, and their revolutionary ideas would have distilled into the very fabric of our social being. In this ideal world, a Dalit designer would have taken the Panthers' iconography and created fashionable apparels. Like the jumpsuit above. And proud Dalits would wear it out into each and every street, not fearing for the raised eyebrows, or worse. And the purists and hipsters among us would come running, speaking of how this fashionable use of the Dalit Panthers' imagery is actually a misuse, a bastardization, of their truly revolutionary potential. And then we would have that debate on national media, the 'masses' would think of it as an important issue indeed to debate. But alas, all we have are dreams deferred and unreal images. #whatdoesadalitlooklike #dalitlivesmatter #dalit #dalithistory #youdontlookdalit #dalitpanther #dalitart

“Such was the condition of our people. We were just like animals but without tails…We ate the leftovers without complaining and laboured for others...Our place was in the garbage pits outside the village, where everyone threw away their waste. We were masters only of the dead animals thrown into this pits by the higher castes… We were imprisoned in dark cells, our hands and feet bound by the chain of slavery. But it is because of us that the world stands. We are the foundation. ” I carried this book with me for months before I was ready to read it. I knew what was awaiting me... Babytai Kamble’s 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲 is the first autobiography by a Dalit woman in Marathi, first published in 1986. It unflinchingly describes in detail the lives of the Mahars of Maharashtra; their festivals, rituals, unfathomable poverty and above all, their tremendous love. It was traumatic reading; the visceral language churned emotions within me in a way no book ever has, especially the plight of women as they are beaten and broken by a vicious patriarchal society. It is not, however, just a historical account, for this is not history. It is a call to action for my generation, a reminder that we have inherited the courage and iron will of our mothers and grandmothers. How will we use it? #dalitlivesmatter #dalithistory #dalit #indianhistory #indianliterature #babykamble #dalitwomenfight #india #dalitpride #dalitality
