Covid, nursing school, two jobs, and having kiddos is tough.... but it’s doable. I want to be an A student 2nd go around but an89.5 will just have to do. I’m grateful that i’m able to be in nursing school and most is online🙌🏻 Initially, I was thinking there is no way but being able to stay at home in my grubbies and do zoom has. been great! We still get our hands on material and already close to the end of the semester. I’ll be done before I know it!! . . . #onestepatatime #nursingschool #girlmom #careerchange #yesyoucan #aandbsarefine #ameritech #hairstylist #futurenurse #cnalife

Guys! The last few weeks have been ☠️! Last week we had foley check off and I didn’t just pass I got a 100 🥳 Then we had an exam in Monday and I did the best I have like all nursing school so I think I’m getting the hang of things. Then I had my OR rotation this week... and while I really enjoyed watching the surgeries I feel like the RN (at this hospital ) was just an errand person, and I already do that as a CNA lol. I hope everyone is having a good Autumn and passing those classes!!!! #nursingschool #futurenurse #studentnurse

Timetables So my timetable doesn’t look very busy for this week. However it was changed just before the week started, this means things were added and changed around. Yesterday i had four lectures, three of them were key lectures. Today i am focusing on my formative essay, this is only 500 words looking at resilience and why it is important for nurses to have this quality. This is due on the 26th October, just before i go home on the 29th for the first time. #student #children ’s #nursing #studentnurse #universityofleeds #paediatrics #futurenurse #medicalstudent #essay #timetable #busy #keylecture #lecture

I recently accepted a part-time position in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. Before moving to Michigan, I planned to transition from mother-baby to the ICU. However, the recruitment process was stalled due to COVID. This required me to pivot my search and seek out other options. In this process, I landed a full-time public health position and have been/will continue working in a public health role on COVID-19 response. It has been wonderful to get back into my public health roots, but as a relatively new nurse and someone who plans on precepting/teaching in the future, I wanted to continue to build my skills at the bedside. I also love bedside nursing and started to miss the hospital after taking some time to "fill up my cup" after leaving New York City. How did I get from Mother-Baby to the Surgical ICU? When I graduated from nursing school, I took a job in women's services. I thought women's health was my passion, but the longer I worked in this area, the more I gravitated to my adult patients and those with higher acuity. I was, like many new grads, worried that I had pigeon-holed myself into a specialty. However, that was not my experience as I interviewed and was offered two ICU day-shift positions! Do I regret going into a specialty for my first nursing job? Absolutely not. The truth is, no matter where you land in the hospital, you will learn how to be a nurse, to advocate for your patients, to manage your time, and to communicate with providers. In my interviews, I pulled from these experiences and highlighted my biochemistry degree and experience as an EMT. Before even applying, I also asked myself why I wanted to be in the ICU and articulated that in my interviews. In saying this, I want to show that it is okay to follow your passion in a nursing specialty fresh out of nursing school. It may be precisely what you want to do, or it can be an excellent learning experience about what you actually love within the profession. You have a long career ahead of you. Where you start does not necessarily dictate where you will end up. I am so excited to share my experience in the SICU and can’t wait for this next chapter!

SPREAD THE WORD, NOT THE GERMS! 🦠🦠🦠🦠 Being that I am going into facilities with active COVID-19 cases, to provide care, I have implemented some preventive measures to protect myself and those around me. 1. I carry a fanny pack with items such as shoe covers, extra masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer. 2. Once I am at the facility I wear a KN95 or N95 mask and a surgical mask on top that I change every time I change units. 3. I wear a face shield and gown 4. I wash my hands upon entrance, use hand sanitizer between each patient, and wash in between units and when leaving. 5. I also change shoe covers each unit 6. When I go to my car I remove my shoes, spray them down with Lysol and place them in a plastic bag. 7. When I get home I strip down in my garage and place my clothing in a plastic bag that is taken to my washer immediately 8. I refrain from touching surfaces or my loved ones and go straight to the shower to wash in antiseptic! What are some things you are practicing at your workplace or in your home to keep yourself and those around you safe? Comment Below 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 #coronavirus #covid_19

YOU CAN’T SEE MY MASSIVE SMILE BECAUSE OF COVID 🦠 BUTTTT YA GIRL JUST DID HER FIRST IV INSERTION!! 💙💉 • “Focus. Palpate. Insert the catheter. See the flash. Pop the tourniquet.” In the wise words of my amazing clinical professor who guided me flawlessly through my favorite nursing skill yet. When I think or nurses & nursing in general the first thing that comes to mind are IVs. To complete this essential nursing skill was honestly so riveting. I feel more like a nurse today than any other day. 👩🏼‍⚕️ I know I’m so cheesy. But it meant so much to have a patient allow me to attempt this skill & to also be able to do this on my clinical instructors last day was so memorable! Hey, also I got the 18 gauge on my first try & TODAY I INSERTED A FOLEY CATHETER!! 💁🏼‍♀️💙 • Today was so memorable. My heart is so happy. Nursing is truly for me. • • #nursingstudent #nursingschool #studentnurse #ivinsertion #firstiv #chamberlaincollegeofnursing #chamberlainuniversity #futurenurse #nursesofinstagram #nursingskills #planneraddict

“I know you’re not a real doctor.. but..”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Does that sound familiar? If you’re a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO ), a podiatrist (DPM ), a pharmacist (pharmD ), an advanced practice nurse (DNP ) or any other professional that has obtained a “terminal” degree, then you’ve heard this rhetoric before. ⁣ ⁣ Many of these beliefs are deeply rooted in cultural misunderstandings. It is a disservice and insult when we reduce and minimize the importance of other professionals to appease our own beliefs. There was a time when the title/role of “doctor” was attributed only to someone with an “MD” (medical doctor ) degree. However, education has advanced greatly and the ways in which care is delivered continues to evolve. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In my previous post, I wrote there is more than ONE way to have the title “Dr.” attached to your name. I said that for educational purposes. Yet, people found a way to be offended. Here’s a PSA.⁣ ⁣⁣ Can you be a “doctor” without attending medical school? YES. You can. However, you won’t be a medical doctor. Go to law school, dental school, get a doctorate in English, Architecture, or Criminology. You can even be a Doctor of Music! There are literally 106 areas of specialty in which you can obtain a doctorate degree in the Unites States.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Again, you cannot become a Doctor of Medicine or a Doctor of Osteopathy without going to medical school. Not only do they need medical school, they need residency training (3-6years ) as well.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Once you have earned your doctoral degree in your field of expertise, you’re granted the title of “doctor”. The term doctor has been poorly co-opted by society to apply to medicine only and hence we often fail to recognize other professionals and their contributions.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The professional doctorate and PhD degrees are considered terminal degrees, meaning you have achieved the highest formal degree in that field. PhD candidates usually complete a dissertation while many doctoral candidates complete a doctoral study.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Take the time to learn your role. Take the time to learn about other professionals that exist and are contributing to the advancement of society. Dont be an unhinged ego with a useless title.

Felt Fall & Festive. 🍁

A personal reflection. After working back to back 12hr shifts, I’ve finally found some time to reflect on the things that have taken place recently. As many of you may know or have seen by now, FIGS posted a product video that sparked major controversy. And rightfully so. The video that was posted portrayed a model wearing a DO (Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine ) badge holding a “medical terminology for dummies” book upside down. Immediately, one can easily determine the flaw in this ad. As many pointed out, the video was practically promoting a negative stereotype of female doctors as being incompetent or less educated (and ya’ll know pursuing education in the medical field is no easy feat ). This video is practically an outright affront to everyone in healthcare. This occurrence essentially highlights the reality that, unfortunately, many women in healthcare face: gender, racial, and ethnic inequality/disparity (and many more ). As an upcoming healthcare professional, I think it is so important to be able to speak up on such issues. My words may not mean a lot to people, but my hope is to spread awareness as to the importance of being able to voice out against injustices such as these. That is why, as a woman, I strongly advocate for other women (and genuinely pretty much everyone ) to speak up for themselves because this notion of inequality, of gender discrimination, is still so strongly prevalent in today’s era. No matter the amount of education a woman receives, many are still treated poorly simply because of being a woman. That is why we must continuously engage in important conversations and empower each other to keep pushing towards a future of equality. That being said, I do not believe in cancel culture, but I do believe in taking accountability and responsibility for one’s actions. As a company that strives to promote to its audience to feel “awesome,” @wearfigs , I hope that you are hearing and listening to the voices of the frustrated; that learning is taking place; that real work is actually being implemented to make real change. To all DOs, women in healthcare, and healthcare professionals — I stand with all of you. Always.
