“I’d get too hangry to fast” maybe, maybe not... ⁠⠀ My reasons for fasting are the same as my reasons for sharing this post. It's not about losing weight (in fact I am actively trying to gain muscle and keep my weight ) it is not about being skinny, or beautiful or to have glowing skin (although that can be a huge benefit ) it was all for my gut health.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I have suffered with IBS symptoms and intolerances for as long as I can remember and lately my symptoms have really flared up. I was having itchy arms that kept me awake at night, dandruff, dry skin, upset stomach and fatigue.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I know from my work that toxicity in the body is like filling a bucket. And when I get these symptoms my bucket is pretty much overflowing. So I committed to giving my stomach a break from digesting food and a chance to focus on repairing. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I was having only fish broth, water & herbal teas for the foreseeable future. To my amazement I wasn't hungry at all, my body was getting all the vitamins and electrolytes from what I was giving it. But I was hungry for knowledge and continuously finding more reasons to add to my why. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ P.S Without a strong why, fasting would be next to impossible. Like everything in life we need to find our why.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I realised my symptoms were attributed to aggravated vata (air & space ) which is my main constitution. Being vata I already have a low digestive fire (agni ) so fasting can actually dim that fire more...no thankyou!⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ So I decided after 48 hours I would call it quits and focus instead on grounding practices to lower my vata. I felt amazing after the fast, my digestion was back on track and I felt no need to continue any longer even though I was originally aiming for 72 hours.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The moral of the story? Listen to your body and do your research. The beauty of all of us is the complexity that makes us unique. Anyone selling a one size fits all approach to wellness is simply misinformed. Researchers don’t know exactly why people develop Crohn’s disease, the current thinking is that it may be a complex interaction of several factors, including genes, immune system involvement, and environmental triggers. • 🧪Autoimmune reaction: • Crohn’s disease is often described as an autoimmune condition, or, more recently, an immune-mediated condition. This is because the disease is thought in part to stem from a problem in the immune system. • 🔬Genes: • It's taking time to pin down the exact nature of how Crohn’s disease may be inherited because while it has been known for some time that it “runs in families,” it was not exactly clear how that occurred. Our first time back at one of our favourite places in Cape Town - Silvermine Nature Reserve - since lockdown (5+ months! ) You have to park “outside” (you cannot drive in ) - BUT entrance is free 🙌🏽. The walk from the front gate to the dam (where we usually park ) is 2.5km (30mins ). From there it is another 2km (25mins ) up along the Jeep track to the path that then branches off to this lookout point (which is another 750m, 5-10min, walk ). You can hike up from Chapman’s Peak drive side to see these amazing views 👌🏽. Today I was floating on the water in the middle of the bay when I felt my mind obsessing negatively about my health. It was an absolutely perfect day. The weather was ideal, not too hot and not too cold. There was a nice breeze. I was with my family. And... best of all, I had ZERO symptoms. For the first time in weeks, I felt good. Actually, I felt GREAT. So, what the hell was wrong with me? Why were my thoughts focused on how awful I’d been feeling before today when I didn’t feel awful in that moment?⠀ ⠀ Luckily, I stopped myself mid thought. I focused my attention to how strong my arms were holding up. I used an ore to paddle against the current and waited for them to fatigue. But they didn’t, they didn’t get weak. Then I focused my attention on my breathing. Stable. Easy. Normal. I looked out to the edge of the bay... no double vision. ⠀ ⠀ There was a time when I wished for moments like today. Longing for moments where Myasthenia Gravis was just an after thought and not a feeling which could be felt as weakness all over my body. Times where I couldn’t imagine putting my hair in a ponytail much less feeling capable enough to go stand up paddle boarding.⠀ ⠀ So, while I have newer health challenges (POTS, pending diagnoses, and a looming dread of brain surgery ), I know that I will overcome those too. Rather than living in the fear of these new symptoms, I want to focus on how far I’ve come. How I’ve overcame the things I never knew I would or could. So far, I’ve survived all of my toughest moments and I’ll continue to survive. That’s what I want to focus on today because who knows what tomorrow will bring.

We don’t take serious pictures anymore. 💞 During the week Gab and I are lucky to have an hour of good quality time together each day. Mornings are rushed getting ready and evenings after the gym are spent making dinner and washing dishes until tubby and bed time. I look forward to the weekends SO much. And she especially does, too! Because we can relax and take our time and enjoy every second together. Sure, there is still lots to get done on the weekends. But we can do it all together because it doesn’t matter if her “help” slows me down. We had a perfect pool day on Sunday. Just the two of us. She jumped into the pool and into my arms at least 50 times. And there is nowhere in the world I would have rather been. Don’t forget to set aside some quality time with your loved ones! No matter how busy your schedule. Love this silly faced, sassy girl so much. 💓

matcha matcha matcha !!! caffeine or coffee addict anyone? When I switched to drinking matcha over coffee I saw an immediate difference in the caffeine energy I got. With coffee it’s very abrupt and you crash, whereas with matcha I feel the effects gradually and have more of a long lasting energy. You just gotta get over the fact that some people think it tastes like grass💚😜

Garlic knots with a VERY interesting secret ingredient 🧐⠀ ⠀ I’m not much of a baker but I saw this recipe for garlic knots from @justine_snacks and was too intrigued not to try it out.⠀ ⠀ So what is it? Tofu!!!⠀ ⠀ Yes these are made mostly from tofu and flour. A very suspect combo at first glance, but it actually melds together quite nicely in a perfect harmony. They turned out SO tasty I was amazed.⠀ ⠀ Who would’ve thought?! Tofu surprises me more and more every day. Who has tried to lose weight on a 1,200 calorie diet? 🙋🏼‍♀️ _ I posted this silly video and have gotten more comments than EVER with women saying they restrict to 1,200 calories (or less ) OR seeing this left them confused on where to start. #tiktok _ The goal is to eat as MUCH as possible while working towards getting healthy... not as little as possible! _ I don’t know why 1,200 calories became a thing but we know why it’s not a great place to start. ❌It can lead to binging. ❌You will feel low in energy. ❌It may lead to nutrient deficiency if too low. ❌It is extremely difficult to maintain and therefore will interfere with normal life events! ❌Irritability or unhappiness. ❌Also, this is why you fall into YO-YO weight situations. _ So what should you do? _ Find the calorie amount that is right for YOU! _ I help women find this by looking at their height, weight, age, activity, and past history. Then I am there to evaluate and tweak when needed. _ See why dieting and restricting to 1,200 calories is not “one size fits all?”. Alternate every other beverage with a glass of water! ⭐️Add sparkling water to your wine or beverage to make a fun spritzer! Helping to hydrate and cut calories in half! ⭐️Be mindful before and after the party to be consistent. Ask yourself 💭 Do you choose a food based on nutrients or based on calories? Do you choose a food based on what you deem as “healthy or unhealthy”, or because you actually enjoy that food? When you eat out, do you choose the option you WANT, or the lowest calorie option? If you are choosing foods based on calories & being the lowest calorie option; this is not healthy. Low calories DOES NOT equal healthiest option. Our bodies NEED fuel to function & thrive each day. Just like you can't expect a car to run well off low quality fuel or run at all on an empty tank, you cannot expect your body to run off low calories & inadequate fuel! If you are someone who counts calories & finds yourself always opting for the lowest calorie options, you need to shift your mindset from low calorie foods = healthy, to nutrient dense foods = healthy! 🥑 Because your body does not recognise calories, it recognises NUTRIENTS. For example lets compare a plain garden salad & a loaded nourish bowl. A plain garden salad made of mostly lettuce may be the 'lowest calorie' option, but it will only provide your body with mainly water, not essential nutrients it needs to thrive. Its also gonna leave you pretty darn hungry just moments later.. On the other hand, a loaded nourish bowl with quinoa, sweet potato, avocado, chickpeas & tahini dressing, while it may not be the 'lowest calorie' option, it is going to provide your body with a huge array of essential nutrients, omega's, fibre and protein - all so essential for your body to function optimally each and everyday. And let me tell you, talking in terms of health, the latter option is BY FAR the winner here. Health is not feeding your body the lowest possible calories and starving it of nutrients. Health is nourishing your body with nutrient dense wholefoods and providing it the fuel it needs so you can live each and everyday feeling energised and AMAZING! So if you are someone who is always looking for the lowest calorie options because you believe that is 'healthy' consider the information above and work on shifting your mindset from basing the healthfulness of food on calories, to basing it on nutrients it provides 🌱

Back at ya with another monster post, but this time COOKIES 🤩🤪 . Can you tell that m&ms are my favorite candy yet? ESPECIALLY the mini ones! . Monster cookies are one of my childhood favorites, so I was on the hunt for a healthier recipe - and I have to say these are so amazing. If you love the taste of PB, you will love these! . Recipe: ⭐️1 cup creamy natural peanut butter ⭐️2 tablespoons honey ⭐️¼ cup light brown sugar, lightly packed ⭐️½ cup + 2 tablespoons quick oats ⭐️⅛ teaspoon salt (I put a little bit more ) ⭐️1 teaspoon baking soda ⭐️½ teaspoon vanilla extract (I put a little bit more ) ⭐️1 large egg ⭐️1/3 cup mini chocolate chips ⭐️1/3 cup mini M&M's Form the balls onto a cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 7 minutes - ENJOY 🍪 🎉 . MEAL PREP 🌱 Want to know the secret to sticking to your meal prepped meals each week, rather than resenting the thought of eating the meals you've prepped and opting for takeaway instead? DO: ✅Prep BALANCED meals using ingredients you are LOVING. ✅Prep meals and snacks you are currently ENJOYING. ✅Prep meals you CRAVE and genuinely look forward to eating everyday. This is exactly what I do week in and week out, and I genuinely look forward to my meal prep EVERYDAY! When planning my meals, I ask myself things like: what meals am I currently enjoying, what cuisine's am I craving, do I feel like savoury or sweet snack this week etc. As always, its about checking in and listening to your body and what it needs. We love taking diabetes notes!!! Since I’m starting trulicity, my endo changed my settings. To make sure that they are correct, I am writing every little tiny detail of everything that I eat today and probably for the next week! That includes, what my bg was, if I pre-bolused, how many carbs I ate, IOB, my dose, and most importantly, what I ate!!! Thankful for my IPP that lets me organize and color code till my little heart is content. Have you ever taken diabetes notes?!

LEMON COCONUT YOGHURT COOKIES 🍋🥥🍪 If you haven’t noticed yet, I’m digging anything lemon flavour lately and loving drizzling all my creations with my latest discovery - @lakantoaustralia icing sugar 🙌🏼😋 YOU WILL NEED (makes 15 cookies ) 1 cup oats or quick oats 1 cup almond meal 3/4 cup shredded coconut 1 tsp baking powder Pinch of salt Zest and juice of 1 large lemon 1/4 cup honey 1 tsp vanilla 2 heaped tbsp coconut yoghurt (I use @purecocobella ) 1 vegan egg Icing (optional, but highly recommended! ): 1/2 cup @lakantoaustralia sugar free monk fruit icing sugar + dash of almond milk HOW TO Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius, Dan-forced. Combine all dry ingredients in a large mixing down. In a separate bowl, combine all the wet ingredients. Pour wet mixture into the dry mixture and combine. Roll mixture into tablespoon sized balls and place on a lined baking tray. Flatten out with damp finger tips as these cookies won’t flatten or spread out. Bake for 12-14 minutes. THIS is the face of PUREEE HAPPINESS for the fact that I’m officially only ONE semester away from finishing all my didactic material for this Doctorate program!! 🎉 What a crazy summer semester this has been...from an unexpected knee injury to losing all power for 3 of the 4 days of my finals week and studying for all my exams through my phone and hand written notes.... All I can say is learning to be adaptable certainly pulled me through these crazy last few weeks.
