I came to Prince Edward Island for the weekend to visit my 94 year old grandfather as I haven’t been able to get over since Covid. He’s doing amazing and I had amazing views while doing my thing! I got the X-rays back from my back: I have degenerative disk disease from L3-S1 and a curvature in my spine. I’ve been living with chronic back pain for quite a while now. I felt good doing today’s class...but then put it out again. I’m a slow learner 🤦🏽‍♀️ The views were amazing, the class was amazing, rehurting my back after being super careful for 2.5 weeks and physio...not amazing! I’m still learning what I can and cannot do, and what it means to not push yourself even when you think you’re doing better. Reason 1 million why I don’t run! EVERYTIME I run, I injur myself. FML. This rime it’s a sprained LCL. Im super swollen but the pain is a LOT less than it was yesterday. Yesterday I would’ve rather been in labor. My Dr. said she attributes my amazing health and body condition (her words not mine ) to not completely snapping it oh and the knee support. But I have to ice and elevate for the next 3 days and sit my ass down(her words also ) for at least 2-6 weeks. If I do go to the gym I can’t do anything leg related. 🙄. When we open our hearts, we open the door to humbling moments. 💕 Humbling moments can certainly be uncomfortable and can include that intuitive “run away as fast as you can“ feeling. In all of my humbling experiences that have shaped my perspective, changed my body, and provided wisdom to my soul, I’ve learned to sit in the discomfort. Let's face it, nutrition messages are conflicting and confusing - especially on the internet. Agree?? Some accounts tell you "don't eat white bread" while others (ahem, mind ) say "white bread is a great choice to eat!" Although I'd like to say all the accounts that have a different message than mine are inherently bad, I can't do that. But I can tell you to be very cautious of what accounts you choose to follow and what messages you choose to listen to. You MUST have a very good understanding of your needs & your goals prior to simply applying a nutrition message that perhaps wasn't meant for you. Jen is a prime example - she was following accounts that were spreading nutrition messages that were actually causing more harm to her body & running goals. When she finally found mine, she realized that her problems were directly caused by nutrition & she had to make a change. 🙋🏼‍♀️ If somebody asked you this question point blank, do you have an answer? 🤔⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I was moving through season-ending sports injury processes, I certainly couldn’t come up with an answer right away. I absolutely would have needed A LOT of time to brainstorm an appropriate response (and probably one that I would have to convince myself to believe ). But at the end of the day, I probably wouldn’t have even entertained this question in the first place. I had always been an athlete and I wasn’t ready to identify by anything else.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But what happens when you temporarily or permanently lose your sport due to injury or other uncontrollable curveball (ie. COVID )? Who are you then? Do you like this person? If not, who would you like to become?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The person you become is directly sourced from the way you identify yourself. If you want to be a sad, tired athlete sitting on the sidelines while throwing yourself a pity party, you will become that person if that’s the identity into which you pour your identity. ☀️ Today was supposed to be interval day... ☀️ But for the past few days I have been in pain. I haven’t been able to put any weight on my heel... the pain radiates from my heel to my arch and up near the ankle and Achilles. I am not sure if it is part of the nerve issues from my back or a separate problem. The pain is all the time... even at rest. My back is also in terrible pain... I just want answers. ☀️ So today’s run turned into only ten minutes on the elliptical on my toes. That’s all I could do. ☀️ I have an appt on Thursday... yikes, I am SO tired of being in pain. ☀️ My threshold for pain is very high, but this is so bad that it is nauseating. ☀️ So, it looks like just getting from the chair to the kitchen will be my workout for a bit!!! Struggling with a back injury really sucks...but it lets me focus on bench again since I can’t squat or deadlift. Did a million sets and worked up to 150x2...which didn’t record because I suck...so enjoy my struggle bus 145x3. Did tons of accessories, mobility and foam rolling...didn’t help. It’s like my lower back is locked in a very painful vice and even bending at the waist is difficult. Have you ever been in that place where you feel like the hits just keep on coming? When it seems like everything that could go wrong has gone wrong and then all of a sudden you get thrown another curveball?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When this happens to me, my first response has historically been anger, frustration, and resistance. These are completely normal and valid responses, but when I begin to white knuckle grip my denial of the current circumstances, I keep myself stuck in a holding pattern. A pattern than prevents me from moving forward, working through the muck, and evolving into an even better human on the other side.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This holding pattern was most obvious for me each time I found myself in the orthopedic surgeon’s office being told I needed another ACL reconstruction. I could see the surgeon moving his lips, but it’s almost like I chose not to hear him at first. If I couldn’t hear it, could it really be true?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As certainty-oriented humans, we tend to meet chaos and challenges with resistance. We can kick and scream all we want, but unfortunately we can’t stop time or change course when the cards dealt to us are out of our control.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What if, instead, we see curve balls as open doors to new opportunities we haven’t yet considered? Are you on the 👈left side or the right side?👉⁠ ⁠ I've met a lot of athletes that aren't 100% sure if they are "under-fueled" ... maybe they experience only 1 or two things from the left side... like bloated tummy/weird digestion & foggy brain...⁠ ⁠ If that's you, you might not automatically think you are "under-fueled". I mean after all .... you DO eat! You're not anorexic ... ⁠ ⁠ And those symptoms can easily be blamed on other things .... ⁠ ⁠ You wonder if you are lactose intolerant, or have a gluten allergy? Maybe you've even already taken some of that out and feel somewhat better .... but you're still fatigued and always scatterbrained. ⁠ ⁠ You tell yourself you just need to prioritize sleep and reduce stress in your life...⁠ ⁠ OR ... What’s up DP Fam? I hope you’re feeling strong AF right now even though we’re still in the 1st week of #stronginfall challenge. Myself, I’m struggling. My hip injury keeps flaring up. PT didn’t help and I can’t get in for an MRI until the 28th. 😔 Doc says I can workout if it doesn’t bother me. Welp, today I can barely walk. I can pinpoint the exact exercise that did it (not a DP one but one from another video I did ) but in the moment, when I feel like I’m crushing it, I forget that I need to be careful. So today I’m resting. Thursdays and Fridays are my fave days of Danielle’s programs - lower body & #amrap and I’m bummed that I can’t get it in today and maybe not tomorrow, depending on how I feel. Listening to my body has been a lifelong struggle for me when it comes to fitness and athletics. And now I have no choice 🤦🏽‍♀️ 😢. Do you struggle with listening to your body’s clues? Ok so I skipped a day. My calf is killing however as the day and evening has gone on, it feels a little easier. Going to put some more tiger balm on it tonight and then continue with AAA tomorrow, then legs Saturday. I hate cardio flow so I’ll prob so a few round of that after legs providing my calf is ok. If it’s not one thing it’s another. I swear my body was recycled from a 92 year olds. Anyway, just because I haven’t done my workout doesn’t mean I binge, I’ve still eaten properly and taken the time out to rest to make sure my body recovers properly. Fear is a natural human emotion. But for some reason, a lot of us try to hide it. Ignore it. Stuff it down. Sweep it under the rug.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😱⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s funny how the things that are stuffed under the rug and stuffed so far down have a way of continuing to present themselves over and over again, and in big ways too.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🐘⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fear is the natural human emotion that serves as a protective mechanism. If I blow my knee out doing a slide tackle in soccer, fear creeps in and makes me think twice about doing it again in the future. ⠀⠀⠀⚽️⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fear can be helpful, but with a lot of my clients, it becomes harmful. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 😰⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Rather than serving as a gatekeeper—a think twice before you act kind of thing—it freezes people in their tracks. It keeps them stuck in the rut of wanting to return to sport but being afraid to try any sport-specific activity. It compels them to retreat to the comfort zone of not being able to do the activities that fuel their soul because staying stagnant feels better than recovering from another injury.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🥶⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If this is you, I hear you. I feel you. And I know you. I have been trapped between the walls of fear way more than I’d like to admit.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🙈⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But how would it feel for you to have a wildly successful return to sport? . W5D3: 8 miles + S&C❌ ... 10km will do🙍🏼‍♀️. . Humid, hilly, hard work, and ... hobbling. . Very little sleep so felt zonked for the first 5 miles🧟‍♀️ then a sudden sharp pain along the outside of my foot ... and a sulking hobble home 🚶🏼‍♀️. . It felt like I was running on the outside of my right foot yesterday, but thought nothing of it. Rookie error 😑 we all know what happens after dismissing niggles or poor form 😒🤕. . Seen as I’m injured for the second time in about 4 weeks I can’t bore you with my running stats on here. So here for your reading pleasure are some facts about me: ⠀ 1. I’m Welsh but live in England. Fun facts: Wales has the best flag in the world 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and we rule at rugby ⠀ 2. I studied International Politics in university. Which sounds boring, but I promise it’s better than it sounds👨‍🎓 ⠀ 3. I love travelling, and prefer city breaks and sightseeing to sitting by a beach or a pool for two weeks. However after going to the Maldives last year I could be persuaded to change my mind 🏝 ⠀ 4. I fell over and have torn the left sacrospinalis muscle in my lower back 💥❗️👎 Looking on the bright side, It’s better than the disc herniating again, but it means more rest, more treatment and more rehabilitation. My life really is two steps forwards and then two steps backwards, but I am not going to give up. It looks like I will miss my attempt a sub 55min 10mile, as it’s only 3 weeks away, which is a pity as I was in very good shape. The Gold Coast Half Marathon in July looks like a very good alternative, with plenty of time to recovery properly and rebuild my form. Has anyone run it, and recommend it ? I have been here so many times before, I know the routine well. #injuredagain #nevergiveup 💪 #rehabilitation
