I am still buzzing after my first encounter of puffins yesterday. As a photographer I said my dream was to see and photograph a Puffin. I never expected to be able to sit so close to these beautiful birds and capture such stunning moments. I really appreciate the opportunity to do this and think the work the @rspb_love_nature do is fantastic. I've joined as a member and am looking forward to receiving my pack in the post 😊 I have lots of fantastic shots from yesterday to share BUT I'm heading back to the cliffs today so will be sharing more over the coming days 😊 #canon90D #sigma150600 #rspbnaturereserve #wildlifephotography #wildlife #wildlifefrommywindow #wildlifeofinstagram #photooftheday #canon #canonphoto #schoolofphotography #springwatch #nature #naturereserve #naturephotography #lightroom #bbcearth #bbccountryfile #30dayswild #uk_wildlife_images #macro #birds #daytrip #puffin #puffins #puffinsofinstagram #puffinstagram #BemptonCliffs #birdsofinstagram

Soft dreams This whole business of deliberately defocusing the subject strikes one as the anathema of intellectual thought — a Wildean ‘art for art’s sake’. That is precisely the impression I too had when I first encountered the concept. After all, anything purposeless seems aptly as pretentious and unnecessarily self-indulgent. But gradually I realised that judiciously defocused images have a purpose profounder than you impetuously tend to attribute to them — they make a splendid study of form and composition. When detail and sharpness are removed, the perception of shape, space and the harmony between them become clearer. So by blurring the subject, something else about the visual is actually becoming sharper, gaining more acuity. That doesn’t mean we ought to make every other picture defocused. Just like we don’t consume only salt all the time despite knowing that much of the taste of dishes comes from it, defocusing lends itself best to a carefully thought-out application. In my limited dabbling with it so far, I have found it to be the most efficacious with flowers. The challenge when one sets out to capture their softness is that to obtain a razor-thin depth of field, you must go very close to the flower with a macro lens, in which case the full flower is no longer visible due to the focal length of the lens. This is where defocusing works wonders. Of course it helps to use a lens of a large aperture and a diaphragm that is blessed with plenty of blades, to round the bokeh out and make it as buttery as possible. Here I used a Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 AF-S VR, whose bokeh is outstanding and it excels at just this. The result is that instead of shooting pixels into our eyes, this sort of image hangs back and helps us see what we miss when we merely watch. #macro #monochrome #blackandwhite #coorg #photography #macrophotography #nature #travel #abstract #fineart #fineartphotography #macro #nikon #coorg #karnataka #flowers

The absolutely ridiculous mantisfly! These insects aren’t at all closely related to praying mantids but belong to the Neuroptera which also includes lacewings, ant-lions, and owlflies among others. Another home visitor that posed for a few photos before being let out. About 2-3 cm long . . #backyardbiodiversity #bangalore #macro #mantisfly #mantispidae #neuroptera
