Morning!! Ahhh legs, a controversial topic. Some may say it's not so important to train them (weirdos ) and other only train them and have no upper body. From last Sunday now how about using the hack squat machine as at reverse power squat machine this will kill your entire legs muscles especially the glutes and hamstrings,but now when we talking about (squats YES squats ) squats is not only for muscles development but help with development of bone density as it is a weight barring movement. Now in terms of foot placement,is depends on your preference and what you are training for. Wide stance is use for power or strength. It's cuts down on the distance needed to travel. But the more narrow the stance is the more engage the quads become and helps the legs develop more fully. Wide stance tends to under develop the inner thigh. So if you are training for aesthetics do both as wide grip also emphasizes different areas like the glutes etc.. As for going all the way down to the ground,this is a touchy topic. Remember your body have the ability and is made to squat all the way down to the floor,now if you have any muscles imbalances,knee or hip injury or ankle mobility issues DO NOT DO IT. You will be better suited doing like box squads and deadlift or others recommendations for someone who know you best. Full disclosure! I don't train legs very hard as I have a postural issue that needs to be fixed. But, when I was younger I was squatting 180kg and deadlifting 260kg. Now! As always I will go into some anatomy and function if the muscles and then talk about growing them. I will just cover the basic muscle groups and not the minor ones. First up we have the quadriceps femoris aka the quads: They are a group of muscles located in the front of the thigh. Tvastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, and the rectus femoris. These muscles work together to flex the knee. The best exercises to grow these muscles are different forms of lunges (Bulgarian, reverse, normal ), squats (front, normal, goblet ) and machines (leg press, leg extension ). The hamstrings are the group of muscle in the back of your legs. They are the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus. These muscles extend the thigh backward. The best exercises for hamstrings are: Romanian deadlift, single leg deadlift, swiss ball leg curl and machine leg curl. Compound movements are the most ideal for muscle growth, however they are the most riskiest. So, if you do not have perfect from. Then practice with light weights or stay on machines. Legs can be a mix or slow twitch and fast twitch so I recommend doing splits with lower reps and then splits with higher. So, you cover all the bases. P.s I missed out glutes because I cannot fit them in due to post length.
