I look at those two pictures of me and I literally get sick to my stomach knowing that’s what I’ve looked like for the past decade. I look at them and I feel sorry for the girl in those pictures, my heart breaks for her. She was broken and didn’t know how to fix herself. But she did learn, it took a lot of struggles and heartaches. But she did it. She found herself even through all the obstacles and curve balls life has thrown her. With the help of my neighbor, we managed to fix my bike yesterday, so I finally was able to get back out for a cycle! For a moment there, it felt like I was getting ready for work! A part of me misses the commute as that was purely ‘me’ time. The @greyhoundlines Greyhound that was my mode of transportation would take a little over 2 hours to reach Toronto. From there I would sometimes walk if the weather was pleasant or take the TTC. On the way back, my niece @majesticblackcat who studies at Ryerson would drop by for a quick chat. I looked forward to seeing her- it was our special little thing. My total commute would sometimes take over 4 hours and by the time I arrived home, I’d be too exhausted to function. Working from home has taken away the stress associated with the commute, helped me manage my days better. I’m glad to see how companies have adapted especially @rogers Rogers. Throughout this pandemic, I’ve experienced excellent support and resources that are geared towards our wellbeing. Mental health is often ignored and swept under the rug but you never know what is going on in a person’s mind that may cause them to go over the edge. My nephew is thick. Sorry. Just had to get that out. Reason I’m doing this post is because I have an overwhelming urge to go and live in a forest, bare foot, with just a floaty dress on. I don’t know where its come from. These walls are trapping me. This house is stifling me. This town is too small. Sick of being around people. Have a thing when my ocd kicks off is that I can’t stop thinking whether the people who have sat on a chair I’m going to sit on was clean. Did it fart. Am I sitting on somebody else’s body stuff. Hello! My name is Mary, but most people call me Mare and welcome to my small business! Seeking Serotonin has been a project in the works for quite some time now. It’s something I am extreme passionate about and it is very personal to me. Mental health is something that does not get a lot of positive talk, which is really unfortunate. People are shamed for saying they go to therapy like it’s something that should be hidden. Saying “I feel sad and I don’t know why” or admitting to have depression stamps people as “crazy” or “unstable.” All these things are untrue and unfair to the people who are stamped with these titles. I, myself, have sought therapy on-and-off for multiple years. It’s someone to talk to who is unbiased, looks out for you even when you can’t look out for yourself and to get confirmation about things you are feeling. However, whenever I need to excuse myself for a therapy appointment I feel the need to say “oh, I just have a doctor’s appointment” or make up another excuse. Mental health needs positive conversations to be started so that people feel comfortable to come forward and speak about their feelings. Seeking help in the form of therapists, friends and family should be something that is praised and celebrated, as it can be very tough for people to come forward. The goal with Seeking Serotonin is to start a positive conversation about mental health. By placing a sticker on a laptop or water bottle, a talking point has been placed for that person to feel more comfortable in their skin and self. I cancel plans all the time, you know why? My mind is constantly rehearsing what I’m going to say when I see this person. My mind constantly worries that “what if” I say something wrong OR what if I get triggered and my bpd symptoms come out! What if they ask me personal questions I’m not ready to answer, how will I respond? What if they judge me because I’m not feeling too happy at the moment? I don’t want to be around anyone’s kids when I’m suicidal and depressed. I don’t have the energy to wear the mask today. I don’t feel worthy of anyone’s time. They are only hanging out with me because I’m the last option. I’m too sad and no one likes my company ! So before you start getting angry at me or thinking that I don’t care or I’m not a good friend take a step back and realise there is more going on than what you can see. When it comes to the day I have been exhausted by thinking all these things I don’t have the energy or the mental strength to hang out with you OK Try and understand instead of judge me.
