How it started, and how it’s going! Look how far we’ve come. Time and perspective are a beautiful thing. When you’re in it every day it feels like a lifetime (kind of like 2020 ) and it’s so hard to see what could be waiting for you on the other side, but now I get to look back and those 57 NICU days in comparison to his life now is but a moment. . We got this, and so do you. ❤️ . . . #howitstartedvshowitsgoing #nicubabymiracle #nicubabyboy #nicumama #nicu #nicunurse #preemiepower

Instagram I need your help.. as most of you know I’m a Neonatal nurse in South Wales.. we use boxes like this (approx 16cm squared and 4-5cm deep ) to put memories in for our babies, we also use them to store beads of bravery to represent the babies stay on the unit and I know the families appreciate them so much! However the company we were using has started charging us an absolute fortune and as this so something we have to fund ourselves we can no longer afford to buy the boxes! It would be absolutely devastating to have to stop providing these for our families and babies.. Please if you know of any businesses or accounts that may be able to help, tag them below or DM me!! I’d appreciate your help and shares more than you can believe ❤️❤️ Thank you! #NICUnurse #memoryboxes #beadsofbravery #neonatal

“If you had told me 4 years ago that my daughter’s due date would come and pass without much thought — not even a panic attack — I would have told you that you were mistaken. Not many people even remember their child’s due date past the first year, but when your baby is born a full 16 weeks before theirs, you remember. The first year, when she was still in the NICU, we celebrated her due date — that she was still with us, that she had struggled and survived and fought for 16 weeks and was finally getting better and bigger. And yet, I mourned the fact that she had been here for that long already, instead of growing in my womb. My daughter’s due date coincides with a friend’s NICU Coming Home day, and this year, instead of mourning Holly’s due date, I celebrated my friend’s milestone. As the years have passed, each year her due date has arrived with less dread, reminding me less and less of my failure to keep her in. As she has grown, it doesn’t carry the weight it once did. I now realize that the failure wasn’t mine, but something that happened to us.” ✨To read more from micropreemie mama Heather click blog link in our bio.✨ #nicustrong

Quick Quiz Question...In the first few breaths, newborns clear _________ __________ fluid. What's it called??⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ Answer: Fetal Lung Fluid⠀ ⠀ In utero, the newborn has fluid-filled lungs. When they come out, they need to expel their lung fluid and transition into air-breathers. This happens for every human in the first few breaths after birth.⠀ ⠀ Some babies have a hard time transitioning and those babies need your help to clear their fetal lung fluid. Whether the baby breathes on their own or we have to help the baby breathe, the fetal lung fluid must clear before the baby can take their first breath and become an air-breather.

#icneonatologie #amsterdamumc #vumc #amsterdam #werkenbijamsterdamumc #werkenindezorg #eenkijkjeopdeicneo #babiesareourbusiness #takingcareoftinylives #neonatologie #verpleegkundige #nicu #nicunurse #niculife #nicujourney #couveusekindjes #prematuur #preemiepower

It’s amazing the things such a tiny human can endure in their first moments and days of life. Especially one who isn’t even supposed to be out of the womb for 11 more weeks. Our second son was intubated, put on CPAP, OG feeding tube, on phototherapy, countless needle pokes, IV fluids, antibiotics, IV put in his head, NG feeding tube, PICC line, head scan, countless blood draws... and so much more. Here is our miracle one year ago at 11 days old, who already experienced all of that and so much more in his life already. More than some will experience in their life. These tiny ones are warriors. Every single one of them. I’m a proud mama of two NICU babies, the two smallest and strongest ones in my life. One is sleeping soundly upstairs and the other watching over him from heaven. 💜

Happy Tuesday everyone! Here with a new educational post about breastfeeding! This is a topic we can go on and on about. But let’s just start with debunking some myths 👇🏽 🤱🏻If you don’t breastfeed, you’re a bad mom ➡️ FALSE! Please don’t ever let anyone tell you this or make you feel bad for not breastfeeding. Whether you decide not to breastfeed or are unable to, that doesn’t not determine your ability to care for your baby. Remember, it’s NOT breast is best. It’s FED is best 🍼👍🏼 🤱🏽Breastfeeding will always hurt and your nipples will always be sore ➡️ False. It is normal to have some soreness/discomfort within the first few days of learning to breastfeed. Sore nipples can be prevented with properly positioning and support, but if you continue to have trouble, a lactation consult or help from a skilled professional may help 🤱🏼Exercising will make your milk taste sour ➡️ False. There is no evidence that shows exercise changes the taste of breastmilk. Exercise is healthy for everyone, including breastfeeding mothers 🤱🏿Small breasts won’t make enough milk ➡️ False! The amount of milk produced not determined by the size of the breast but by the breast tissue (milk-producing cells ) 🤱🏽 You shouldn’t breastfeed in public ➡️ VERY FALSE. Can we please take a minute to thank @ashleygraham for normalizing breastfeeding (in public & on the go )! We 👏🏽 are 👏🏽 here 👏🏽 for 👏🏽 it 👏🏽. There’s a lot of mom shaming for breastfeeding in public and she’s not having any of it☝🏽✨ #YASSQUEEN “My whole career is based off of being sexy and my breasts have been the forefront of many magazine covers, so then to flip to my baby is there sucking on them, I think that people just had to switch their minds. But they are multi-purposeful. I think there’s so many new mommies out there who are agonizing over what they should and shouldn’t be doing.” -Ashley Graham Thanks for stopping by y’all 💕! More on breastfeeding to be continued 🍼 📸 : @ashleygraham

💜NICU ADMISSION BED: 💙Isolettes are typically preprepared in the event that an emergent delivery occurs, warranting admission into the NICU. This allows the NICU team to rush the fragile infant’s bed into the delivery room- there is no time to waste in these types of extremely critical situations. ⭐️Hats- 2 hats are provided to facilitate improved thermoregulation, to minimize the infant’s high risk of losing too much heat too rapidly; ⭐️Bulb syringe- used to remove any secretions from the nose or mouth after delivery, helps to facilitate a patent airway; ⭐️EKG leads- placed on the infant’s chest and are used to detect heart rate and respiratory rate; ⭐️Pulse ox probe- this is always placed on the right hand after delivery to detect a preductal oxygen saturation; ⭐️Measuring tape- measures infant’s length and head circumference, this measurement is used to provide proper measurements for respiratory equipment; ⭐️Temp probe- typically placed on the infant’s belly or any non boney prominence; ⭐️Saline wipe- used to clean any area, kept in the warmer isolette so it isn’t cold when it touches the infant’s fragile skin; ⭐️BP cuff- placed on the thigh of a micro preemie or the infant’s ankle; ⭐️Neo Wrap- looks like saran wrap and is used right after delivery to preserve thermoregulation for infants under 32 weeks or below 1500 grams ⭐️Transwarmer (stored underneath isolette )- this is placed underneath the blanket/a layer is needed between the transwarmer and the baby, used to facilitate thermoregulation, like a heating pad; ⭐️Pacifier- used to aid in facilitating regulation if infant demonstrates ability or interest in rooting/sucking; ⭐️Diaper- placed on the infant after the infant’s weight is obtained. 🔥Have questions? Any comments? Drop them below!

NICU GOLDEN HOUR 👶🏼✨ The Golden Hour is a set of evidence-based interventions in the first 60 minutes of neonatal life (term and preterm ) ⚡️👶🏽 Rapid stabilization and management of the infant in this timeframe maximizes long term outcomes, including decreased incidences of hypoglycemia, hypothermia, early-onset sepsis, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH ) + bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD )! In one hour these interventions should be done by the interdisciplinary team and the incubator top should be closed 👇🏽 1. Prepare the isolette or warmer, increase temperature of the room 2. Place the infant in polyethylene plastic wrap + on a thermal mattress under a warmer 3. Stabilize and transfer to the NICU Attach cardiac leads, pulse oximeter and temperature probes 4. Take axillary temperature (maintain 36.5-37.5 C ) 5. Umbilical catheter (UVC/UAC ) or peripheral IV catheters placed; obtain x-ray to confirm placement 6. Obtain labs (CBC, blood culture, blood gas ) and check blood glucose 7. Perform MRSA swab (umbilicus and nose ) 8. Initiate D10W when indicated (glucose < 50 ) 9. Start antibiotics if indicated 10. Head to toe assessment (neuro, respiratory, cardiac, GI/GU, sacral dimple, peripheral perfusion ) 11. Obtain measurements (head, chest, abdomen, length ), weight and vital signs 12. Suction as needed 13. Maintain oxygenation + administer surfactant via ET tube if indicated 14. Administer erythromycin and vitamin K (eyes + thighs!! ) 15. Take repeat temperature and remove polyethylene bag 16. Nest infant, position head midline 17. Close incubator top and ensure temperature + humidity settings are correct (< 28 weeks 80%, > 28 weeks 60% ) 18. Update family + chart 🤱🏽🥰 This could look different depending on the complex needs of individual infants! Following evidence-based Golden Hour protocol is essential for the improvement of tiny human outcomes - our most vulnerable patients need the best start they can get 👶🏼 @themidwestnurse / Photo from @pinterest

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐬 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐆𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 Some of you may have seen the picture in the left a few times but truly I love to reflect back on where I started. Nearly 6 years ago I started my nursing journey as a CNA. I was so excited to learn how to check vital signs! I dreamt of the day I’d be a PNP. Now I’m only 7 months away from graduating and becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner! Some people may disagree with my path (starting NP school soon after I became a nurse ) but I KNOW I am confident in my skill. I absolutely love going to clinical and my preceptors have encouraged me so much! I’ve learned so much and how different being an NP is from being an RN. Trust me, you don’t need to have 10+ years of experience because it’s a completely different role and you start all over! It is important to build knowledge as a nurse to help you assess patients better and learn how to build good rapport with patients. I’m grateful that I’ve gained those experiences in the last 3.5 years of being an RN. So yes, I’m going to be a PNP with 4 years of RN experience and I am confident! I started as a CNA and now I’m finally so close to my goal. Remember, follow your heart! If your goal is to be an NP nobody can discourage or stop you from going back sooner to get that masters degree! Who else has faced people that try to discourage you for going back to become a nurse practitioner sooner? We need to stop discouraging each other!

The ✨𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐫✨ of neonatal life refers to the first hour of postnatal life in newborns. This concept includes practicing all of the evidence-based interventions in the initial sixty minutes of life in order to produce better long-term outcomes for the baby. Neonatologists around the globe stress the importance and benefit of the ✨𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐫✨ concept in order to significantly reduce hypothermia, hypoglycemia, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH ), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD ), and retinopathy of prematurity (ROP ) in the preemie population. NICU nurses have many roles & responsibilities during this critical time window. Some examples of bedside tasks during ✨𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐫✨ include: 🛌 Prepare the bed (isolette or warming table depending on age/weight ) 💦Use humidity as necessary per protocol  🔥Turn on and preheat warmer 🌡Attach temperature probe 🩹Place electrodes & pulse oximeter probes 🤒Take temp (maintain infant’s temp 36.5-37.5 C ) ⚖️Measurements (head circumference, chest, girth, length, weight )  🦠Suction available (oral & nasal ) 🌬Oxygenate as needed to maintain sats within target range 🔨Intubation supplies (if necessary ) 💊Consider surfactant administration if infant requires intubation 👣Obtain a set of vital signs (HR, RR, BP, oxygen sat ) 🩺Head-to-toe assessment 🔬Sacral dimple & skin check 👶🏼Maintain neutral head position of the neonate 🧪Collect labs (CBC, Type & Cross, MRSA, blood cultures, CBG, glucose ) 📸Perform diagnostic images (CXR, echo, etc. ) 💉Establish IV access (UVC/UAC ) 🚫Avoid procedures in the first 72 hours (LP, PICC placement, IV sticks, heel pokes ) 👨🏻‍⚕️MD performs neuro exam and checks reflexes  🧫Start antibiotic administration 🏥Orient family to the unit as available 👀Eyes & Thighs! (Erythromycin ointment & Vitamin K injection )  📑Obtain orders 👩🏻‍💻CHART!!! ✨NICU fam, am I missing anything from the list? LMK!✨
