I so often hear myself telling my patients “it’s all connected” in response to them questioning why one body part hurts in relation to another. In western medicine we became so specialized, which was a wonderful thing, as there is so much to learn and being able to zero in on specific body parts or systems helps us gain the most knowledge, but I think the flaw in the system is that we forget to circle back to make the connections. Every thought, every move affects the whole body. We are made up of interconnected systems that make a whole. When I was in high school and college I went from doctor to doctor, specialist to specialist, searching for answers to chronic illness symptoms. When I was finally diagnosed with POTS and learned it was an illness of the autonomic nervous SYSTEM it made so much sense. It explained why I could feel so many seemingly unrelated symptoms simultaneously. They were all connected. The more I’ve studied the human body and chronic illness, the more I’ve realized just how vital these connections are within us. Healing requires a holistic approach. Part of my purpose for opening my own practice is to be able to provide a more holistic, mind- body approach to PT. . . . . #physicaltherapy #holistichealing #POTS #posturalorthostatictachycardiasyndrome #ehlersdanlossyndrome #postconcussionsyndrome #healing #rehab

Polyvagal theory (poly- "many" + vagal "wandering" ) is a collection of evolutionary, neuroscientific and psychological claims pertaining to the role of the vagus nerve in emotion regulation, social connection and fear response. Understanding what’s happening with your nervous system and how it effects everything including your thoughts, feelings and emotions from your past...is the single most important stepping stone to overcoming any chronic disease or ill state of health. We teach you how to identify these things as part of our treatment process. We even have a hypnotherapist in the office to help you overcome these brain blocks. Let us know if you’re still suffering...we are here to help!

Let's explore each of the most common post-concussion symptoms 🧠 Starting with…. HEADACHES "I feel like there's a tight band squeezing my head" "There's a feeling of pressure pushing down the top of my head" "My eyes feel like they're being pulled apart” Does that sound familiar? Headaches are one of the most commonly reported symptoms after a concussion, but there are different types of headaches: * 💆🏻‍♀️ Cervicogenic: Related to the cervical spine and may be provoked by neck movements. The pain usually originates from the receptors located in the tissues of the cervical spine. It is known that every concussion has an element of whiplash to it, so addressing this is key. * 💓 Autonomic dysregulation: The autonomic nervous system (ANS ) is associated with functions of the body that are automatic, including heart rate, breathing, blood pressure and temperature regulation. Issues with the ANS can alter the blood flow to the brain, resulting in the sensation of increased pressure in the head. A treadmill test would help to determine whether this can be a cause of headaches. * ⚡️ Migraines: Prevalent in individuals who have a history of migraines. They are usually described as an intense, stabbing pain on one side of the head. Sometimes, they can be preceded by an “aura” and can coincide with an increased sensitivity to light, noise, or smell. It's important to work with your doctor to choose the right medication for you. * 👀 Post-traumatic vision problems: Vision problems are a common symptom, because of how much of the brain is involved in visual functions. After a concussion, there is a disconnect of the visual system, with the other sensory systems of the body that allow us to effortlessly move through space. As a result, headaches can form from using our eyes, such as reading and navigating through visually-busy spaces. A neuro-optometric assessment and vision therapy can be beneficial. What have you found has helped your headaches? #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #concussion #braininjury #brain #postconcussion #postconcussionsyndrome #pcs #concussionmanagement #vestibularrehabilitation #allinyourhead #headaches

I busted my quads on an exercise routine this morning then ran a few errands for hubby that required decision making that was more difficult than it should have been. After the last one I was exhausted and hungry and I beelined to @thymeandagain to pick up something healthy and delicious for lunch. Again, choosing was again difficult thanks to #postconcussionsyndrome , but I walked out with this amazing tuna on risotto. It was hard not to wolf it down (I guess I was hungrier than I thought ). Afterwards there was rest, sitting with my purring munchkin with my eyes closed. I definitely needed more rest this morning. #happiness #glutenfree #braininjurywarrior #reality

A concussion is a functional injury. That means the injury doesn't show up on standard imaging, blood tests, or even a standard examination. This is also why they are one type of #invisibleinjury The problems arise because the different parts of the brain are no longer able to communicate properly either due to decreased neural connection OR decompensated metabolic factors in the body, the brain, OR BOTH. Here's the good news: The brain is stimulated by our sensory receptors -Muscles moving -Touch -Vision -Hearing -Vestibular sensation (motion ) -etc! We can USE these different things to strengthen poorly functioning brain regions effectively rehabbing them back to their optimal strength. ☝️Link in the bio☝️ #Limitlesshealthmn #5DMatrix #functionalneurology #dysautonomia #concussion #postconcussionsyndrome #migraines#braininjury #concussions #mtbi #chiropractic #neurology #DACNB #rehab #rehabilitation #neuroplasticity #CarrickTrained #braininjury #brainhealth #neuroscience #Hope #iamnotinvisible#Headache #fatigue #migraine #vertigo #dizzy

Do you trust yourself?⁣ ⁣ I didn’t, for the longest time, I had zero trust in myself but I moved through the world as if I owned the place. ⁣ ⁣ It was much more easier to pretend I was a self confident, strong woman, than to admit I felt like the tiniest piece of sand you can find on a beach. ⁣ ⁣ What changed? ⁣ ⁣ I decided I didn’t want to live like that anymore and I didn’t want to be a negative example for my Monkeyboy. ⁣ ⁣ There had always been a belief in me that I was meant for a greater life and for a long time I was afraid of what that meant, afraid of my own power. I’m not saying I’m better or more special than anyone, I believe we all have this power but because of limiting beliefs, we deny it to ourselves and to others, over and over again. ⁣ ⁣ My power is being able to serve folx, and recognition of this power in me is what allows me to recognize it in others. ⁣ ⁣ I see your power, it might be dormant for now, and you might be afraid of it but I’m telling you, if we work together, you will learn to embrace it, you will heal and love will come naturally. ⁣ ⁣ Now, click the link in bio and book your FREE consult so we can get started ASAP!⁣ ⁣ In light and love⁣ Cendrine⁣ 💜

Scientists have found a correlation between a disease involving chronic pain and alterations in the gut microbiome. Fibromyalgia affects 2-4 percent of the population and has no known cure. Symptoms include fatigue, impaired sleep and cognitive difficulties, but the disease is most clearly characterized by widespread chronic pain. A Montreal-based research team has shown, for the first time, that there are alterations in the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tracts of people with fibromyalgia. Approximately 20 different species of bacteria were found in either greater or are lesser quantities in the microbiomes of participants suffering from the disease than in the healthy control group. . Meet Carlah, and this is her story: "When I was told I had fibro and early onset rheumatoid arthritis at 22 I thought I was sentenced to a life of pain and suffering. I would cry 😥 myself to sleep every night. This couldn't be how I was going to spend the rest of my life! I went on a search for a better way. I became holistic, I juiced, saw naturopaths, acupuncturists, did detox cleanses, ate organic, you name it, I tried it- everything. That stuff helped with some symptoms here and there, but I was still miserable. Hopeless. By 30, 8 years later I thought that's it, I had a sentence to suffer 😭 I poured my heart out to JESUS 🙏🏼🙌🏼 Then enter these Health and Happiness products, these GUT HEALTH products . And 1 year later I've been made new 😭🙌🏼💗 Jesus answers the cries of those who Love him and TRUST in HIM 🙌🏼. He has given abundantly more then I could have ever imagined. 😭💗”

Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS ) has been used by the medical community to explain the symptoms felt by people for months and/or years after experiencing a traumatic brain injury. Brain rehabilitation institutions such as Cognitive FX argue that “syndrome” implies that the pathology of these symptoms is not well understood when, in fact, it is. We know what causes post-concussive symptoms - traumatic brain injuries do. We know there are treatments for these symptoms, so why do we keep calling it a syndrome? The language used to explain PCS needs to be shifted and more effort needs to be put into people living with PCS. It is treatable, it’s not a death sentence, and people should not have to live with the effects of a concussion for so many years. #tbisurvivor #tbi #tbirecovery #tbirecovery #facesoftbi #pcs #postconcussionsyndrome #postconcussionlife #postconcussionrecovery #postconcussionsyndromeawareness #postconcussionsymptoms #mtbi #brainhealth #braininjuryadvocate #brain #braininjurymatters #caregivers #caregiversupport #caregiverstress #powerofpatients

“Some of the things we like to tell individuals suffering from PCS and questioning whether getting under care with a NUCCA practitioner is their next best step on the road to recovery are: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1 ) “You can't have a head injury without an upper neck injury.” It requires, on average, 95 G's of force to sustain a concussion. Whereas a whiplash injury requires on average, 5 G's. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2 ) “NUCCA care is exceptionally precise.” NUCCA chiropractors provide image guided care which means calculations are taken from x-rays that are unique to every patient based on their own anatomy and also based on the traumas that individual has sustained over their life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3 ) “The NUCCA adjustment is surprisingly gentle.” Many patients who have never been under NUCCA care before are unaware that they have received their first correction as there is no cracking, twisting or popping of the neck.” @sfnucca ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Who has helped you? Fascial Counterstrain . . 💯 Fascial Counterstrain is one of the many treatments that we offer at Lighthouse PT and Sports Medicine. Today we wanted to teach you a little about this technique. . . 🔥The fact is that IT WORKS. And our existing/past patients can vouch for it! . . 💎 Counterstrain utilizes diagnostic tender points to identify painful, reflexively protected and contracted tissues. Reflex tissue contractions occur in the body’s deep fascia layers, skeletal muscle tissues, and/or smooth muscle structures in response to a variety of mechanical or chemical insults. Examples include trauma, surgery, postural strain, repetitive motion, infectious or viral conditions, and even inflammatory diets. Once present, this form of reflex muscular dysfunction can contribute to a multitude of symptoms. . . 🔥 When you allow ample time for healing/rehab and you still notice pain and don’t feel 💯, it is likely that you also have fascial dysfunction. The fact is that not many providers really treat or assess the fascia with your plan of care. This is NOT the case at Lighthouse. . . 👨‍⚕️ 👩‍⚕️ Our practitioners are trained in Fascial Counterstrain and can shut off sources of pain that you have been dealing with for years. While FCS can be a sole treatment, it is typically utilized in connection with other treatments and post operatively to control pain and edema. 📲 Call today to schedule an appointment #chosePT #dpt #rehab #physicaltherapy #doctorofphysicaltherapy #cupping #therapy #noopiods #treatment #wellness #health #gym #workout #physio #sportsmedicine #movement #injuryprevention #Healthcare #painmanagement #triggerpointtherapy #physicaltherapypnw #iastm #softtissuerestriction #achillestendonitis #pcs #postconcussionsyndrome #fcs #JonesInstitute #fascialcounterstrain

This week in YTT we talked about the nervous system and it’s connection to the gut. Did you know that 90% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut?! Serotonin is a brain chemical that promotes a sense of well-being, helps make memories, etc. I had no idea that the gut is involved. That makes healthy eating even more important after a brain injury. Today on rethinkspeechtherapy.com I’m writing about 3 easy, brain healthy recipes + some resources to learn about nutrition and brain injury. Then I want to know, what’s your favorite brain healthy recipe?!

Is it safe? Should we keep a concussed person up? Should we wake them every hour over night? Last week I posted about concussion red flags, if any of these show up or you are concerned, it's hospital time! A concussion is a structural injury and there is no testing for it. Generally, if there is something serious happening, like a brain bleed, symptoms present in the first couple hours and it will show up on imaging. There is no magic number, but the research supports monitoring for individuals 3-6 hours post injury. Sleep is crucial in the acute phase of a concussion, in fact your brain is asking you for it, as you will often feel super sleepy. So rest for the first 24-48 hours. Take that time to book your appointments with your concussion literate manual therapist and naturopathic doctor to get your concussion rehab started, and then get moving with some gentle walking. Let's chat about how Naturopathic Medicine can support your concussion recovery. Book your free discovery call, link in bio 👆🏻👆🏽👆🏿 #naturopathicmedicine#naturopathicsportsmedicine#postconcussionsyndrome#postconcussionsymptoms#brainresiliency#concussion #tbi#invisibleinjury#leakybrain#brainhealth#mentalhealth #shiftwork#buildingbetterbrains#craniosacraltherapy

They say routine is key right? Sunday, migraine. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, wake up with a headache. Go to work, headache. Come home, lunch, and write up quotes, head ache. Dinner and bed, headache. Ice pack and laying down to ease the headache. Take my Sleeping tablets. Lights out, generally still with a headache. And now Repeat. The last three weeks have been crazy hard both mentally and physically due to this flare up. I have the Neurologists and doctors absolutely stumped. What is Post Concussion Syndrome? Read below for this short but true write up on it 🙌🏼 Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS ) is the name given to a condition in which concussion symptoms persist and prevail for months or years following a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI ). PCS usually occurs after a concussive event - this could be a car accident, sports injury, fall, or even whiplash/jolting of the brain. When a person experiences an injury to the brain, the cells in their brains are deprived of oxygen, interfering with basic tasks such as signaling. The brain, being the incredible organ that it is, tries to compensate for the lack of oxygen by creating alternative neural pathways in an attempt to resume signaling/pass information on. These pathways, however, are often not as efficient or effective as the original pathways, causing the brain to work less efficiently. Because of this, deoxygenated blood continues to be fed to the brain, causing a plethora of problems that may last months or years. #postconcussionsyndrome #pcs #braininjury #struggle #exhausted #overit @braininjury .heroes @headspace_aus @postconcussionstudies @post_concussion_life @tapintothebrain

1 YEAR 🧠 ⠀ ⠀ Today marks one year since I sustained a concussion back at work. It has been a year filled with lots of ups and downs, but I am so grateful for all the lessons I have learned along the way. I do think things happen for a reason, and although I don’t wish this injury to anyone. It has been incredible to see all the new skills I have learnt like resilience and self compassion. ⠀ ⠀ Self compassion is a skill that did not come easy to me for the first half of my recovery and I have many people that have helped me build this skill. One of these special people is @ummulpatrawala , who has taught me the importance of self compassion through yin yoga. She explains how not accepting and forgiving yourself throughout ones recovery journey can be very draining and fatiguing in itself (no wonder I had such intense fatigue for the first 3-4 months of my recovery!? ). Once you are able to give yourself the love and acceptance you need, your body does a much better job focusing its energy on the healing 💛⠀ ⠀ I am so proud of the progress I’ve made over this past year and will continue pushing forward towards my new goals like driving & running! 🙌⠀ ⠀ To anyone else out there on your own recovery and healing journey - stay positive, with the right mindset, things will get better! ⠀ ⠀ 📷: @saraillamas

Hiiii new followers 👋🏽! I haven’t introduced myself properly in a while, so let me take the time to tell you all a little about me. I’m a 27 year old freelance illustrator and invisible illness advocate based in London 🌻. I’m really passionate about feminism and politics and the power of storytelling around my lived experiences through my creative work! I enjoy using Photoshop and Procreate for my work, but also adore painting in watercolour - I just wish I had more time for it 🥺. I really love cats and goats, and am big into fitness - I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and CrossFit (both from home at the moment! ), but still can’t bring myself to love running (unless I get to sprint ) 💦. I’m currently really interested in illustrating for children’s books, and am a Mentee on the brand new @pathwaysinto programme! As someone living with Multiple Sclerosis and Post Concussion Syndrome, I feel very strongly about using my illustrations to articulate the realities of living with chronic health conditions. I’m so proud of how far I’ve come since my diagnoses (Oct 2018, Oct 2019 ) - I am resilient, determined and strong 💪🏽! My goal is to find a way to embody carefreeness again 🌻 , something that was taken from me after I became ill. I hope you’ll join me on my journey to rediscover being carefree! #kidslit #kidlit #illustrationdesign #illustrationaday #illustrationforchildren #disabledartist #childrenspublishing #childrensbookillustration #mentalhealthadvocate #chronicillness #chronicallyill #brazilianjiujitsu #bjjlifestyle #msstrong #wahlswarrior #postconcussionsyndrome #concussionrecovery #chronicillnesslife #concussionlife #concussionawareness #chronicillnesswarrior #illustratrice #procreateillustration #concussion #concussionawareness #msawareness #multiplesclerosisfighter #carefreeandsick

I’ve had a lot of feels over the past month. A friend brought up @that it feels a lot like when we first had our brain injuries — you’re having to learn how to do everything differently ... figuring out coping mechanisms and how to deal with all the self isolation. 💚 those of us with TBI have been left alone to figure this out for way longer than the month that this has been. We had no guide to follow. We had no clear path. But worst of all, no one checked in on us or even really cared how we were doing. 💚 many of us lost close friends and family members. They just drifted away because they didn’t know how to deal with our injury and self isolation. They said mean things and thought they were being helpful by telling us we’d feel better if we just got out of the house — even though the overstimulation would’ve put us deeper into isolation after an outting. 💚 as much as staying home might be boring and stressful, be thankful you don’t have a TBI that is causing you to self isolate. Once this is over you will be able to go on with your regular lives ... while those of us with TBI will continue to isolate. . . . . . #anxiety #braininjuryrecovery #braininjury #traumaticbraininjury #ptsd #cte #pcs #awareness #nevergiveup #headinjury #concussion #selfcare #rehab #acquiredbraininjurysurvivors #braininjuryawareness #neuroscience #recovery #motivation #postconcussionsyndrome #braininjurysurvivors #disability #isolation

I woke up today feeling a heaviness in my chest. I’m just so ready for life to go back to normal. I’ve loved my extra time to myself and with my Kaia girl. I’ve loved how this time has taught me an even greater appreciation for the little things, like food. I’ve loved seeing how people are supporting one another. I personally have had so many of my close friends being immensely supportive of me right now, even financially. But every time I see someone wearing a mask or gloves, my heart sinks to my stomach. Every time I hear about another person I love worried for their grandparents or newborn babies, I feel like crying. People are afraid, and frankly no one even knows for sure what the fuckkkk is going on. How can any of us FULLY trust our sources anymore? I don’t know at all what to believe, I don’t want to live in fear, and I don’t want to allow this to limit my life and joy. So I’m trusting, as we all can. Trusting that everything ALWAYS happens for a reason. Trusting that this too shall pass. I’ve been trying not to put pressure on myself to do anything any particular each day and take it one day at a time. But in the back of my head there’s that voice saying what I SHOULD be doing. Be checking on your friends during this time who struggle with any kind of mental illness. A lot of us are totally surrounded by our triggers and can’t exactly get away from them! For anyone struggling right now, if you don’t feel like you have someone to talk to, my inbox and ears are open ❤️ On a side note I’m SO GRATEFUL I can finally practice inversions again without pain my head!! This week has been one of the hardest weeks yet.⁣ ⁣ I feel like I’ve been knocked out. Battery drained to zero. Nothing left in me to summon and get shit done. It’s scary and frustrating when your body betrays you. ⁣ ⁣ Initially I thought “oh shit, what if I have COVID-19?” But then I tuned in to my body, and realized this feeling was vaguely familiar. I know this feeling: it’s my chronic illness, my disability, my post-concussion symptoms back in full force.⁣ ⁣ It’s taken me a long time to accept this reality. That my body can and will betray me at any time. That I’m not living in the same body I was in 18 months ago. That I have an invisible disability, with an array of symptoms that I don’t even fully understand.⁣ ⁣ If I’ve learnt anything throughout this time living with post concussion syndrome, it’s to enjoy the good times, and ride out the bad. It’s to tune in to my body and honour what it needs. It’s that pushing through the fatigue, nausea, headaches and dizziness doesn’t make me a hero, or feel any better.⁣ ⁣ What I need is rest. To take as much as I can off my plate. To take care of myself as best I can. ⁣ ⁣ It’s wild that we don’t always do this, isn’t it? That we don’t intuitively know how to slow down and rest when we need it. ⁣ ⁣ When our bodies are tired, when we don’t feel good or when we’re sick, we’re taught to push through it, ignore it and keep going. ⁣ ⁣ I invite you today to listen to your body and it’s needs. To trust it’s intuition. To rest when you need it and honour that part of you. You absolutely deserve it and your body does too. 💙
