First full week of mohs surgery fellowship in the books! Hardly feels like work when you’re doing what you love. UMass has six mohs surgeons so I’m constantly getting exposed to different techniques and surgical styles. A little bit about what we do: ➡️Your mohs surgeon is trained in pathology and acts as the pathologist for your surgery. We look at the skin cancer under the microscope and evaluate 100% of the tumor margins. This ensures the smallest defect but also gives you the highest cure rate. ➡️Your mohs surgeon also does the reconstructive surgery. We are trained in reconstructive surgery, including flaps and grafts, to help give you the best cosmetic and functional outcome. ➡️Your mohs surgeon is part of a multidisciplinary team. We work with plastic surgery, surgical oncology, and radiation oncologists (just time name a few ) to give you the best care. Hopefully you don’t have to see us, but if you do we’re here! 👩🏻‍⚕️ #dermatology #mohssurgery

We are so excited to welcome ROGELIO JUÁREZ ( @rogeliomybrogelio ), our fourth and final 2020 Editorial Resident to the TSW community. ✨🌊🎙. . Rogelio Juárez is the grandson of a Bracero farm worker and the son of a marine and an immigrant from Ciudad Juárez. He grew up in the suburbs of Arizona where learning Spanish was seen as a joke, a waste of time, something they slapped his mother on the wrist for when she was a child. He didn’t read about the Chicano movement in a single line of a textbook until he was 22 years old. 📖 . . He writes to his dead, to the ones he lost, however poorly or mistakenly. He disagrees with Freud’s idea of grief who said its function is to detach the survivor’s memories and hopes from the dead and instead sees grief, as Alexander Chee says, as irrevocably bound to love. His own writing is tied to assimilation, grief, and finding words that go against the violence of the national narrative. ✊🏽. . After the death of his father, he came extremely close to not graduating high school. Instead of attending class he went somewhere else (Middle-Earth, Dune, the nighttime journey of Milkman Dead finding his grandfather’s farm ). It felt like a privileged migration, a surviving that he didn’t know he was going through. What pushed him toward life was discovering Toni Morrison and reading Song of Solomon, the first non-white novel he encountered on a syllabus. All of this as his attempt to understand how writing didn’t just come from reading and language, but from the world, too. How writing is bound to flight, to discovering that one’s sense of loss is inextricably tied to one’s capacity to reimagine —!that this can lead to the work of literature. 🙏🏽🎙🌊. . You can get a second glimpse into his work here, but make sure to follow @rogeliomybrogelio and us over the next few months. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊. . . . . . #writer #writersofinstagram #artist #artistsoninstagram #essay #essayist #residency #announcement #beforeafter #twsirl #writers #writerscommunity

Had some fun teaching the new interns and our rotating med students how to put on a long arm fiberglass cast today! This is the first of many cast/splint clinics that we do throughout the year! 𝕊/𝕆 𝕥𝕠 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕚𝕞𝕞𝕚𝕘𝕣𝕒𝕟𝕥 𝕡𝕒𝕣𝕖𝕟𝕥𝕤. ⁣ ⁣ The ones who came here with nothing but gave us everything. Who allowed us to dream although their dreams were taken form them. Who gave us their work ethic, their never-ending faith, and more than we could ever possibly repay them for.⁣ ⁣ Before residency, my girl @docjacques7 and I had a conversation about the grit & resilience we’ve developed as not only first generation Americans/immigrants, but the first in our families to obtain more than a high school diploma. ⁣ ⁣ It hasn’t been an easy road for either of us, but the hurdles have truly made us better people and better physicians. Navigating the system with English as a second language has shown us how difficult it is for patients who don’t understand their healthcare team. Communication and relationship building are some of the more crucial components to good care, and language and knowledge barriers ⁣ ⁣ To all my immigrant friends, those who know a second language, those who identify with an underserved population- we need you. Your future patients need you. Use the roadblocks as fuel. We’ll be waiting on the other side. ❤️ ⁣ ⁣ Dr. Stephany

I’VE GRADUATED PGY-1! Peace out! Off to being a PGY-2 at FAU! 🌟 This year has been one of the most exhilarating and exhausting years of my life, physically mentally and emotionally. I feel like I’ve become an entirely different person. It’s been a year that has tested me to the max and I couldnt’ the more grateful for it. Starting intern year was all about familiarizing myself and learning the system as well as learning the management of the “bread and butter” cases like COPD exacerbation, MI, etc. At the end of it, I gained so much knowledge, so many amazing colleagues and experience. ✨ I’m stoked to start PGY-2 and to hone my internal medicine techniques further and enrich myself. Also need to get my act together because I’ve booked my step 3 exam date and I need to study and do well! 📚 Cheers 🥂 to second year! . . . . . #wearfigs #internalmedicine #florida #baptisthospital #internyear #secondyear #masks #coronavirus @wearfigs #residency #medicine #savelivesstayhome #savelives

NOOOO!!! These were the words when I saw my mask 😷 dropping on the floor from my hand 🤚... and Cherry On Top 🍒 I had to chase it further for a few seconds so that I can pick it up and toss it in trash 😞.... It was very windy 🌬 !! 🤷‍♀️Yup this happens IF you Don’t pay attention and Don’t put your mask ON while still inside ur car before stepping out... So I was on my way to the grocery store ... was talking to my friend on Bluetooth while driving but after parking switched to my phone 📱... 🔅Held the phone in my hand 🔅Picked the wallet up and ... 🔅Yes picked my mask 😷 too while still talking... 💭Thinking I’ll put it on RIGHT after I step out of my car🚘 and hang up the phone... BUT even before all that.... THERE it was on the Ground right after I opened my car door and with my one foot out !!... It was already down there!!🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Thank GOD I always keep extra in my car.... Of course 🤷‍♀️ I have left my house too many times without a mask in the beginning when this all started ... 💥So MORAL OF THE STORY....... ‼️Please wear a mask and wear it before leaving your car (no need to wear it while driving ) ‼️Please keep extra masks in your car just in case if u forget or it gets dirty , you have another one to use What has been your mask mishap so far !!! 👇Share if u have any😷😷 . . . . #mask #masks #masks4all #lessonlearned #lessonslearned #lesson #moralofthestory #extramask #familymedicine #takecareofyourmask #physician #healthcare #healthcareheroes #healthcareworkers #healthcareprofessional #residency #medicalstudent #medicalstudents #pakistanibloggers #desiblogger #pakistani #burberry

Lots of lives can be saved in critical care but you have to learn how to handle death and dying if you wanna go into critical care, because not everybody can be saved. Most crit care docs learn how to handle it with compassion and professionalism, but I’m pretty sure they will all tell you there are always a few that don’t make it, who they never forget. And often when you do save them, the patients don’t remember you 😰. Critical care folks - what do you think? 𝐍𝐏 𝐯𝐬 𝐏𝐀 𝐯𝐬 𝐌𝐃? I get a lot of messages asking why I choose NP over the other routes. I can’t speak for any of those routes since I never did them but I can talk about why I chose the NP route. • 1. Holistic care is the foundation of your medical treatment process. As nurses we are taught these fundamental ways of caring for the patient and when we become nurse practitioners, it translates into that. • 2. Building off your real life work experience. I can’t tell you how easy talking to parents comes to me because I worked as a NICU nurse. I know exactly how to interact with parents. My assessment skills and ability to recognize symptoms also comes from my work experiences. • 3. Less debt. While you do NP school, you can continue to work as an RN. Although I quit now, I worked for majority of the program and have zero debt. • 4. Tuition reimbursement: Your hospital may even pay for part of your tuition. Who wants loans?! Nobody! Once again, another route to no debt. • 5. Vast career opportunities: The best part about nursing is the fact that there is so many things you can do. Even as an NP you can teach in nursing schools or do research and advance your career further to get a doctorate! I love that I can switch to the education side when practicing in clinic doesn’t fit my lifestyle. • • These are reasons I choose to do the NP route. Comment below with any questions!

Back at the hospital for another night of trauma surgery. Let me just say night shift is NOT easy but taking call is a big aspect of surgery so if you’re interest in this career path you have to be comfortable with long work hours, night shifts, taking call and being challenged on a day to day basis. Second week of #residency complete ✔️ I was on a Gastroenterology elective block 💩and got a great mix of outpatient clinic, inpatient service and OR time with endoscopies and colonoscopies (the GI doc uses a long, flexible tube with a camera to examine the GI tract from above and below )! It helps make diagnoses like ulcerative colitis, crohns disease or any issues in the esophagus! These patients and their families have to endure so much in and out of the hospital. Kids are so resilient. 🥺Couldn’t think of a better way to start intern year! I cannot stop thinking about how amazing it was to be part of the My Health Matters 2020 Summit by @winningwomenseries yesterday (PC: hubby @mhali87 who actually took this pic mid conference💗 )⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am so inspired by the founder of the summit, @cynthiahellenaguilar , who experienced the heartbreaking loss of her fiancé last year - and channeled her energy into putting together a panel of female experts to help empower women to learn more about their own health, mind and body. Cynthia is the ULTIMATE boss lady and I cannot thank her enough for including me in this. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Key points of our panel discussion on the mind-skin connection with @houshmandmd and @livingthederm :⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🤯 The mind-body skin connection is REAL, and there is a litany of science to back up the connection between fight or flight, stress hormone responses & its consequences on your skin.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🙇🏽‍♀️ Certain skin conditions can be triggered or worsened by stressful events. Many skin concerns can lead to anxiety, depression, & self esteem issues —> so no you are NOT being vain. It is OK to care about your skin! Its the largest organ of your body and its tough when its health can be visible to everyone around you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💸 Good skin care doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated. But it is important for it to be tailored to YOU, and consistency is key. There is no one-time magic fix and a LOT of false promises out there. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 💜 Being compassionate with your skin is important. Understand that the over-filtered instagram world is not representative of REALITY.
