“All we contribute to the internet is part of the database. So, from now everywhere records your face, your fingerprint, your CCTV. And since we perform to the database, what we are living, is like a Big Brother influence of the camera.” – @cao_fei Pioneering multimedia artist and filmmaker Cao Fei explores what it means to be human in an increasingly digital world that is accelerating faster than we can contemplate or understand. ‘Blueprints’ reopens at the Serpentine from tomorrow, 4 August. “Some issues are so integrated into our daily lives that they are too close to see... Cao Fei seems to humanise a lot of these stories. We often forget the people woven into the processes of neoliberal consumerism. Science fiction helps to re-entangle us with these human realities.” – Angela Chan, Curator of @worm .art.ecology Tap the link in bio to read a conversation on changing realities and speculative fictions in the work of Cao Fei between Angela Chan and sci-fi writers Gu Shi and Kanyu Wang. How can thinking like a geologist help save the world? 💭 Join us this afternoon for the second online talk of ‘The Long Time Sessions’. This fortnightly series explores cultivating care for the world beyond our lifetimes 🌍 . TODAY, 23 July, 1pm BST (link in bio for FREE registration ) Geologist Marcia Bjornerud, author of Timefulness: How Thinking like a Geologist Can Help Save the World, will discuss how an awareness of Earth’s temporal rhythms might be critical for planetary survival. Bjornerud’s work explores how knowing the rhythms of Earth’s deep past – and conceiving of time in the way a geologist does – can give us the perspective we need for a more sustainable future. For this session, Bjornerud will be in conversation with The Long Time Project co-founder, Ella Saltmarshe. The Long Time Sessions are organised by The Long Time Project, in collaboration with the @theRSAorg and the General Ecology Network at the Serpentine Galleries. “Representation and particularly, observation from life, are ways of bearing witness and sharing testimony.” - Jennifer Packer We're delighted to announce New York based painter Jennifer Packer will have an exhibition at the Serpentine later this year. Packer transforms the art historical traditions of portraiture and still life within a contemporary context and urgency. On occasion, she describes her flower compositions as funerary bouquets and vessels of personal grief; these paintings about loss are often made in response to tragedies of state and institutional violence against Black Americans. While the casual repose of her portraits is the result of her care for the sitters, Packer acknowledges her choice to paint figures as political. —————— #JenniferPacker Jennifer Packer Say Her Name, 2017 Oil on canvas 101.6 x 121.9 cm, 40 x 48 inches Courtesy: The Artist, Corvi-Mora, London and Sikkema Jenkins & Co, New York Photo: Matt Grubb Jennifer Packer Tia, 2017 Oil on canvas 63.5 x 99 cm, 25 x 39 inches Courtesy: The Artist, Corvi-Mora, London and Sikkema Jenkins & Co, New York Photo: Matt Grubb
#SoundOn 👂 The latest episode of the Serpentine's Back to Earth podcast explores the ways artists are using technology to imagine alternate realities, new alien languages and manipulate time. Victoria Sin is joined by guest host Victoria Ivanova ( @vivanova101 ), who works with the Serpentine’s Arts Technologies team. Together they explore the ways technology is being used as a connector to things we don’t usually perceive, from extinct species and ancient landscapes to space bacteria and the manipulation of time itself. Elsewhere in the episode, we hear from @jakob_kudsk_steensen , @jennasutela and Yasaman Sheri ( @yeasnos ). This episode coincides with the release of the Future Art Ecosystems report, produced by the Serpentine’s R&D team and Rival Strategy.
